(New Britain, CT) - The Portland Sea Dogs (53-42) used a 5-run first inning to beat the New Britain Rock Cats (40-56), 9-5, Monday afternoon at New Britain Stadium. Portland closed out the series by taking 3 of 5 from the 'Cats and have next two days off for the Eastern League All-Star game. With Trenton's win earlier in the day, the âDogs hold a 3-game lead (four in the loss column) over the Binghamton Mets for the second playoff spot in the Northern Division.
Catcher John Otness led the 11-hit attack for the 'Dogs, going 2-for-5 with a home run and 4 RBI. Otness laced a 2-run double in the first inning off losing pitcher Jeff Manship (1-4) and blasted a Ryan Mullins fastball over the left-field wall for a 2-run shot in the fifth.
