
Behind Malec and Coke, Trenton Defeats Binghampton 2-0

(Trenton, NJ)- Thunder reliever Phil Coke pitched eight shutout innings and Third Baseman Chris Malec had four hits as Trenton defeated Binghamton 2-0 on Monday afternoon at Waterfront Park. Trenton now leads Binghamton by 8 1/2 games in the Northern Division. The game time (2:05) was the quickest game of the season for the Thunder.
Trenton (59-37) scored the lone two runs of the game in the first inning. With two outs, and Shortstop Ramiro Pena on second base, Malec belted a two-run home run over the right-field wall to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead. Malec ended up going 4 x 4 with two doubles. He ended up one hit short of the cycle. It was Malec's second four-hit game of the season. Malec has reached safely in nine straight trips to the plate. The last time Malec was retired was in the 5th inning on Saturday night against Binghamton. Thunder Outfielder James Cooper also had two hits in Trenton's win.
Thunder starting pitcher Brian Bruney ended up going one scoreless inning in his second Major League Rehabilitation appearance. His rehabilitation appearance was courtesy of St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center in Lawrenceville, NJ. Phil Coke (8-4) went the final eight innings and yielded only three hits. He struck out 11 and walked only 1. The 11 strikeouts tied his career-high from 5/2 against Portland. He retired the final 20 batters he faced. Binghamton starting pitcher Tobi Stoner (0-4) allowed six hits and two earned runs in six innings. Trenton is now a season-high 22 games over .500 (59-37).
Trenton is off the next two days for the Eastern League All-Star Break. The Thunder return to action against the Portland Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, on Thursday night from Hadlock Field in Portland, ME. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. Trenton returns to Waterfront Park on July 25th against Portland.
