
David Smith goes 3-for-4 but Fisher Cats fall 4-1 to Defenders Monday night

Norwich, CT- David Smith went 3-for-4 with an RBI single but the Fisher Cats fell 4-1 Monday night at Dodd Stadium in the final game before the All-Star Break.
The Fisher Cats put together three consecutive singles to start the top of the second inning against winning pitcher Adam Cowart (8-6). J.P. Arencibia (3-for-4) singled, moved to third on a single by Brian Jeroloman (2-for-4) and scored on Smith's single to right field to put New Hampshire up 1-0.
Connecticut (49-48) took the lead in the last of the third inning. Losing pitcher Robert Ray walked Ryan Rohlinger before yielding a two-run homer to shortstop Olmo Rosario to put the Defenders up 2-1.
Ben Copeland added a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning and Rohlinger homered in the last of the fifth inning off Ray for the final margin.
Ray (3-4), in losing his fourth straight game, allowed four runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four. Julio Pinto, Orlando Roman and Seth Overbey each pitched a scoreless inning in relief for New Hampshire (37-59).
The Fisher Cats did bring the tying run to the plate in the top of the eighth inning after two out hits by Jeroloman and Smith. Kelvin Pichardo struck out Kyle Phillips to end the inning.
Cowart allowed one run on seven hits, walking two and striking out two. Defender Reliever Brooks McNiven, Kelvin Pichardo and Justin Hedrick combined to pitch four shutout innings. Hedrick earned his fourth save working around a walk to Ryan Klosterman (1-for-2, 2 BB) in the top of the ninth inning.
The Fisher Cats split the four game series in Norwich with Connecticut after taking two of three games from Portland to start the roadtrip to record the first multi-city road trip win of the season.
The 2008 Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game takes place at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Wednesday, July 16 at 7:05pm. Gates open at 3:00pm.
