Baysox Swept By Way Of Walk-Off

July 14, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release

(Harrisburg, PA) - The Senators completed a four-game sweep of the Baysox in dramatic fashion with a 3-2 walk-off victory Monday afternoon in Harrisburg. The Baysox took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth with closer Julio Manon on the mound but could not suppress the Senators. Starter Chris Tillman worked five shutout innings, but his effort was overshadowed by that of Harrisburg's Jordan Zimmermann. Tillman allowed just four hits and struck out four to earn the no-decision. Matt Wieters picked up a base hit to bring his hitting streak to 13 games, tied for the longest such streak by a Baysox player this year. Wieters has played in only 18 games since being promoted from Class High-A Frederick.

Bowie broke a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh. Lou Montanez led off the inning with a solo blast over the wall in left field. It was the 20th homerun of the year for Montanez, who leads the Eastern League in big flies. With one big swing, Montanez marred Zimmermann's stellar day. The Harrisburg starter threw 7.0 innings, giving up just the one run on three hits. Zimmermann allowed two walks and struck out nine batters on his way to the no-decision.

The Baysox added another run in the top of the eighth inning off Harrisburg reliever Yunior Novoa. Jonathan Tucker hit a two-out double to left field and Mike Rodriguez brought him in to score with a base hit to left, making the score 2-0 Baysox. The Senators brought in Josh Perrault to face Lou Montanez and Perrault got a little lucky. Montanez launched a shot to right-center field that bounced just in front of the wall before going up and over for a ground-rule double. Rodriguez was forced to hold up at third base, though he would have scored easily on the play. Perrault got Nolan Reimold to pop out to end the inning.

Randor Bierd and Gerardo Casadiego combined for 2.2 shutout innings in relief of Tillman, giving up just three hits combined. Julio Manon came in to try for the four-out save and retired Luis Jimenez to end the eighth inning.

The Senators came up with some timely heroics in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Marvin Lowrance hit a double to center field. Manon got Edgardo Baez on strikes for the second out before walking Matt Rogelstad and Seth Bynum to load the bases. Garrett Guzman drove one into the gap in left-center that scored all three runners and the Senators completed the sweep in walk-off fashion with a 3-2 victory.

After the sweep, the Baysox move to 53-44, third place in the Southern Division. Bowie gets Tuesday and Wednesday off for the All-Star game before returning home to begin a five-game series with a doubleheader against Reading Thursday the 17th. Game on begins at 6:05 p.m. with gates opening at 5:30. RHP Jason Berken (6-3, 4.02 ERA) will pitch game one for the Baysox against Phillies RHP Edgar Garcia (0-1, 7.59 ERA).

Thursday is Lindsay Czarniak Night at Prince George's Stadium! NBC 4 sports reporter Lindsay Czarniak will be on hand to meet and greet fans during the game and will also throw out a ceremonial first pitch before the doubleheader.

The Bowie Baysox are in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Baysox individual game tickets, season ticket plans, group outings, picnics and birthday parties are currently available for booking by calling the Baysox front office at (301) 464-4880.
