Wings Rally Falls Short in 5-4 Loss Monday

August 26, 2019 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

The Red Wings playoff hopes took another hit Monday night as Rochester lost in Buffalo 5-4.

After falling behind 5-1 after three innings, the Wings (66-67) battled back to make things interesting late.

Drew Maggi - one of three Wings with multiple hits Monday - knocked home a run in the fourth inning to bring Rochester within three at 5-2.

After a fielding error on a Wilin Rosario grounder scored a run, Zander Wiel blooped a single to right, plating Ramon Flores to make it 5-4 in the seventh. That brings us to the biggest play of the night. Ronald Torreyes followed Wiel and with two on and two out, ripped a line drive to left field. But, Bisons left fielder Jonathan Davis made a highlight reel diving catch to rob Torreyes and preserve the Herd's slim lead.

The Wings wouldn't threaten in the eighth or ninth innings.

The bullpen trio of Fernando Romero, Jake Reed and Sam Clay combined to toss three scoreless innings to keep the Wings in the game.

Red Wings starter Charlie Barnes suffered the loss, allowing all five runs on nine hits and four walks.

The Wings did take the early lead, scoring a run in the first inning without recording a hit as Bisons starter Thomas Pannone walked four batters in the inning.

Game two of the four-game series is Tuesday night at 7:05 pm. Kohl Stewart gets the ball for Rochester.
