Hayes Honored as IL Player of the Week

August 26, 2019 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis Indians third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes today was named as the International League Player of the Week. The weekly honor is the first of Hayes' five-year career and the first weekly award won by a Tribe position player this season; three pitchers - Mitch Keller, Dario Agrazal and Alex McRae - have combined for four pitcher of the week honors in 2019.

Hayes, 22, started the week with a home run in Toledo and closed his six-game slate with four straight multi-hit performances, including a career-high tying four hits on August 23 vs. Louisville. The four-hit showing was his second of the season (also: August 1 at Toledo) and seventh of his career.

In total, Hayes batted .522 (12-for-23) with one homer, one double, four RBI, four runs scored and a 1.238 OPS during the week and ranked among league leaders in average (1st), hits (T-3rd), on-base percentage (4th, .542), OPS (6th) and slugging percentage (7th, .696). He also walked four times while going the entire week without a strikeout.

On the season, Hayes is hitting .262 (106-for-404) with a career-high 10 home runs, two triples, 28 doubles, 52 RBI and a team-high 12 stolen bases in 13 attempts. Defensively, the two-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner has again handled the hot corner to near perfection, posting the best fielding percentage among all professional third basemen (.988, Colorado's Nolan Arenado is second at .981).

Hayes was selected by the Pirates in the first round (32nd overall) of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of Concordia Lutheran High School in Tomball, Texas. He is the son of 14-year major leaguer Charlie Hayes.
