YESTERDAY: The Tribe lost their 18th game when scoring first yesterday in a tight 3-2 loss to Louisville, with both of Indy's runs coming in the first inning. Jake Elmore sent a ball over the left field wall to score Cole Tucker for his sixth home run of the season, one shy of his career high set in 2013. JB Shuck gave away three free bases in the third, including a bases-loaded walk to put Louisville on the board. Rookie Davis inherited the bases-loaded jam in the third inning and left the ducks on the pond to preserve the Tribe lead. Louisville's Mitch Nay went 3-for-4 and highlighted his day in the sixth inning with a long two-run shot to left field to give the Bats the lead for good. Indy stranded leadoff doubles in back-to-back innings and tallied only one hit in the final three innings. Jake Elmore and Eric Wood combined for four of the six Indians hits.
IL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes was named the International League Player of the Week today, his first career weekly honor and the first weekly award by a Tribe position player this season. Three Tribe pitchers have combined for four pitcher of the week awards (Mitch Keller 2x, Dario Agrazal, Alex McRae). In six games over the past week, Hayes hit .522 (12-for-23) with one home run, one double, four RBI, four runs scored and a 1.238 OPS. During a streak of four straight multi-hit games, he tallied a career-high tying four-hit game on Aug. 23 vs. Louisville on the heels of a 3-for-4 performance at Toledo. He also earned four walks and did not strike out the entire week.
JB, THE STARTER: LHP JB Shuck made his second career start yesterday, exactly one month since his first start at Syracuse. He went a career-high 2.2 innings and allowed one run, his first run allowed outside of his July 15 appearance when he surrendered seven in 0.1ip against Syracuse. He was on Pittsburgh's Opening Day roster as an outfielder but has since made the switch to the mound, where he is 0-0 with a 4.24 ERA (8er/17.0ip) in 13 games (two starts) for Indy this season. He also threw a scoreless frame for the Buccos earlier this year.
WOOD BATS: OF Eric Wood's two-hit day yesterday marked his fifth multi-hit game since returning to the Tribe lineup from playing for Team Canada in the PanAm games. In August, he is hitting .298 (14-for-47) with two doubles, a home run and four RBI. In 57 games prior to the PanAm Games, he hit just .226 (36-for-159). Wood leads the team with 81 at-bats as a designated hitter and holds a team-high .272 average (22-for-81) among Indy's DHs with more than 20 at-bats.
JAKE BACK ON TOP: After a 2-for-4 performance at Louisville yesterday, UTIL Jake Elmore retook his lead of the IL batting race. His average jumped back up to .342 (116-for-339), while Durham's Jake Cronenworth dropped into second with a .339 clip. Elmore has hit safely in 18 of his last 21 and 21 of his last 25 games overall and also ranks third in OBP (.407) and tied for fourth in doubles (31) in the league. Indy's last batting champion was Junior Noboa (.340) in 1989 and they have had just four batting titles since 1969 (also: Bernie Carbo in 1969, Gene Locklear in 1972, Dallas Williams in 1987).
SECOND-HALF MARTIN: With a pinch-hitting appearance yesterday, OF Jason Martin has hit safely in 20 of his last 25 games, posting a .322 average (29-for-90) with one triple, 10 doubles, 17 RBI and 10 runs scored. He is batting .300 (48-for-160) with three homers, one triple, 13 doubles and 28 RBI in 44 games since the beginning of July.
BREAKING RECORDS: Mitch Nay's two-run home run was the 146th long ball surrendered by the Tribe pitching staff this season, which broke the franchise record previously set in 2005 (145). Indy's pitching staff also broke the franchise record of 1,153 strikeouts on August 22 at Toledo and used its franchise record 36th different pitcher that same night (Blake Cederlind).
VS. TOLEDO: The Indians and Mud Hens face off for their final head-to-head series of the season beginning tonight. Indy leads the season series, 12-9, with four games to play. The Tribe haven't finished below .500 against the Mud Hens since 2014 (10-11). In the IL West, the Indians have guaranteed a record over .500 against Louisville and a losing record against Columbus, with only one win needed in the series to finish over .500 vs. Toledo. They are 34-30 vs. the IL West with eight divisional games to play; Indy has finished over .500 in the division each of the last two years and six of the last seven overall.
WADDELL WOWS: LHP Brandon Waddell made his 27th appearance (sixth start) with Indy on Saturday and earned his second quality start, fanning seven over six innings of three-hit, three-walk ball. He has pitched into the sixth in four of his six starts for the Tribe this season and has earned a decision in all six, as well, going 2-4. The southpaw chopped his ERA by over a full run, going from 9.59 to 8.58 (54er/56.2ip).
PITCHERS WHO RAKE: Brandon Waddell went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored on Saturday against Louisville, marking his fourth career RBI, first RBI in Triple-A and first career multi-hit game. He joined Mitch Keller as the only Tribe pitchers with an RBI this season and became the first Tribe hurler with a multi-hit performance since Chris Volstad went 2-for-4 on Aug. 28, 2015 at Louisville. The Indians pitching staff is ranked fourth among five NL affiliates in the IL in pitchers batting average at .093 (7-for-75). Syracuse leads NL affiliates with a .200 average (12-for-60).
DOVY DOMINATING: RHP Dovydas Neverauskas has thrown five hitless innings in his last two outings combined, marking the first time this season where he's worked two or more innings in consecutive appearances without allowing a hit. The last time Neverauskas accomplished that feat came during a three-game, multi-inning, no-hit stretch on April 20, April 23 and April 27, 2018 with Indianapolis (2.0ip in each outing).
TRAYVON: In his last 21 games, OF Trayvon Robinson is hitting .299 (23-for-77) with three homers, one triple, two doubles, 12 RBI and five runs scored. The 31-year-old's season average rests at .303, and he has been above .300 for all but a six-day stretch (April 5-10).
THE CLOSER: RHP Montana DuRapau nailed down his 10th save in as many opportunities Friday night. DuRapau, 27, had just one career save in 26 appearances for Indy prior to this season. He is now 64-for-70 (91.4 percent) in career save chances and hasn't been charged with a blown save since May 13, 2017 with Double-A Altoona. He has converted 21 straight save opportunities.
