International League Players of the Week Named

August 26, 2019 - International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Indianapolis third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes and Syracuse right-handed starter Corey Oswalt have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period covering August 19-25. Indianapolis and Syracuse are the first two teams to have claimed five weekly awards this season. Hayes follows Mitch Keller (2x), Dario Agrazal, and Alex McRae. Oswalt is now a two-time Pitcher of the Week. The other Mets to have been so honored this season are Chris Mazza (2x) and Drew Gagnon.

KE'BRYAN HAYES, Indianapolis Indians IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Ke'Bryan Hayes banged out twelve hits over his past six games and led the International League last week with a .522 batting average. Last Monday he collected his tenth home run of the season in dramatic fashion, as his two-run blast with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning tied Indy's contest with Lehigh Valley which the Indians eventually won in the 10th. He finished the week strong as well, collecting multiple hits in four straight games including a 4-for-5 night on Friday to lead the Tribe past Louisville, 5-2. Hayes has been one of his club's most consistent offensive producers this season. He leads the Indians with twelve steals and is among the team's top three players in most categories including hits, doubles, triples, home runs, RBI, and runs scored.

22-year-old Ke'Bryan Hayes is in his fifth season playing professionally and his first above the Double-A level. In 2018 he was an All-Star in the Double-A Eastern League and has been rated by both MLB.com and Baseball America as one of the top prospects in the Pirates farm system. Hayes is a native of Tomball, Texas.

COREY OSWALT, Syracuse Mets IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK The Syracuse Mets are storming towards a potential division championship thanks in no small part to the right arm of Corey Oswalt, who delivered two more wins this week to push his total on the season to ten, tied for most in the International League. Last Monday he was masterful in a 1-0 shutout of Lehigh Valley, tossing 7.0 scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and no walks. He took the hill Sunday against Rochester and was victorious once again, limiting the Red Wings to two runs over 5.2 frames as the Mets rolled to an 11-3 triumph that pulled the club to within a half-game of the division lead.

Corey Oswalt, who turns 26 next week, is in his eighth season pitching professionally and just his second season playing higher than the Double-A level. He is a veteran of 19 games at the Major League level with New York (twelve starts). Oswalt is a native of San Diego, California.
