Rochester Red Wings News Release

The Rochester Red Wings dropped their series opener in Scranton/WB, 5-4, to kick off the second half of their two-week road trip. C Jacob Nottingham and RF Erick Mejia each logged multi-hit performances to pace an offense that combined to post six hits. The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak in series-opening games, the longest streak by a Red Wings team since at least 1997.

Rochester broke into the run column in the top of the second, scoring first for the fourth-straight game. After loading the bases with nobody out, SS Jeter Downs grounded into a fielder's choice that scored 1B Matt Adams and gave the Wings a 1-0 lead. This was Downs' 10th RBI since 7/1, fifth-most on the team over that span.

CF Jack Dunn led off the visiting half of the third with a base-on-balls, the sixth time he's drawn a free pass in his last five games. After a stolen base and a wild pitch moved him around to third base, DH Jake Noll brought him home on a fielder's choice to give Rochester a two-run advantage. Jacob Nottingham launched his fourth home run with the Wings two batters later, a 413-foot shot that scored Noll and expanded the lead to 4-0.

After two scoreless innings from Wings starting pitcher RHP Jackson Rutledge, the RailRiders kicked off the bottom of the third with a pair of singles and a walk. A sacrifice fly from SS Oswald Peraza scored DH Carlos Narvaez to cut the lead to three. RF Everson Pereira singled to center field two batters later, followed by a subsequent throwing error that allowed 1B Jake Lamb to cross the plate and make the score 4-2 after three frames.

Pitching took control over the next three and a half innings, with both teams combining for three singles from the fourth until the bottom of the seventh, when Oswald Peraza notched a double to put a runner in scoring position. Everson Pereira brought the RailRiders to within one run on an RBI single and came around to score on a wild pitch three batters later to tie the game at 4-4.

Jake Lamb led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and was replaced at first base by pinch runner Brandon Lockridge, who stole second and third base in the following at-bat. Oswald Peraza singled up the middle to give the RailRiders a 5-4 lead. The Wings failed to reach base in the top of the ninth, falling to 18-14 in one-run games.

Jackson Rutledge took the ball to start on the mound for Rochester, making the sixth Triple-A start of his career. The right-hander worked 5.0 full innings, allowing two earned on five hits while striking out six and walking two. RHP Daniel Mengden, RHP Joel Peguero, and LHP Tim Cate covered the final four innings in relief. The trio combined to allow three earned on five hits with five strikeouts.

Tonight's Diamond Pro Player of the Game goes to Jacob Nottingham, who went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and a run scored in the contest. The California native has collected a hit in four of his last five games since 7/23, hitting .333 (6-for-18) with three home runs, two doubles, and seven RBI over that span.

The Wings are back in action Wednesday at PNC Field, as they look to even the series at 1-1. RHP José Ureña is slated to make his 15th start with Rochester this season, coming off his fifth consecutive start of at least five innings pitched. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
