Saints Roughed Up By Clippers, 15-7

COLUMBUS, OH - The St. Paul Saints have not had much luck at Huntington Park over the last couple of years. The Saints lost nine of 12 in Columbus in 2022 and dropped four of six in a May series earlier this season. Tuesday night wasn't any better as they lost 15-7 to the Columbus Clippers. The loss drops the Saints to 16-12 in the second half.

Andrew Stevenson led off the game with a solo homer to right, the second time he's led off the game with a long ball and his 13th of the season, making it 1-0.

Jair Camargo made it 2-0 in the second with a 432-foot solo homer to left-center, his 15th of the season.

From that pont on, the Clippers scored 15 unanswered runs. In the bottom of the inning the Clippers knotted the game up. Zach Collins led off with a single to right-center, moved to third on a double by Jhonkensy Noel, and scored on a sacrifice fly from George Valera cutting the Saints lead to 2-1. Johnathan Rodriguez singled putting runners at the corners and with two outs Chris Roller's infield single to first scored Noel tying the game at one.

The Clippers put the game away in the fifth when they sent 12 men to the plate as the Saints allowed a season-tying high eight runs.. Daniel Schneeman led off with a walk and Bryan Lavastida drove in the first run with a double to right-center giving the Clippers a 3-2 lead. Collins made it 4-2 with an RBI single. A walk to Noel followed by a hit by pitch to Valera loaded the bases. Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice as third baseman Anthony Prato's throw to third pulled Tony Wolters off the bag as a run scored making it 5-2. Reynel Delgado increased the lead to 7-2 with a two-run single. After a walk to Roller loaded the bases, Brayan Rocchio's ground rule double gave the Clippers a 9-2 lead. Schneeman's RBI groundout made it 10-2.

In the sixth, the Clippers extended their lead with three more runs. With one out, back-to-back walks to Valera and Rodriguez put runners at first and second. A wild pitch moved the runners up and Delgado's groundout scored Valera making it 11-2. After a walk to Roller, Rocchio added an RBI single and that was followed by an RBI double from Schneeman giving the Clippers a 13-2 lead.

For the third consecutive inning the Clippers scored again plating two in the seventh. With one out Noel singled to right-center, Valera doubled, and Rodriguez knocked them both home with a single making it 15-2.

The Saints tried to make it interesting in the ninth sending 11 men to the plate, scoring five runs, but it was too little, too late. Anthony Prato led off with a walk, moved to second on a walk to Trevor Larnach, and scored on an RBI double from Kyle Garlick making it 15-3. Mark Contreras followed with an RBI single getting the Saints to within 15-4. With one out Austin Martin's RBI double made it 15-5. The Saints got to within 15-6 on a sacrifice fly from Tony Wolters. After a walk to Alex De Goti, Stevenson extended the game by reaching on a fielding error from the second baseman Delgado that scored Martin making it 15-7, but Larnach's hot smash to second was fielded cleanly by Delgado who retired Larnach to end the game.

The same two teams meet in game two of a six-game series on Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m. (CT) at Huntington Park. The Saints send RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (3-5, 5.93) to the mound against Clippers RHP Hunter Gaddis (1-7, 6.35). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
