Werner Shoots Out Checkers 3-2

South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Charlotte, N.C. - It took an overtime and 6 rounds of the shoot out, but the South Carolina Stingrays walked away from Bobcats Arena with two points, by dispatching the Charlotte Checkers 3-2 in a shoot out.
The Stingrays came into St. Lawrence Homes Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena looking to even the season series against the Checkers at a game a piece. In the first period it was the Checkers getting on the board first taking a 1-0 lead after 1 period of play.
Charlotte increased their lead to 2 goals less than 7 minutes into the 2nd period on a 5 on 3 goal. It was at that point that it was do or die for Rays, and their veterans took over.
"I really have to give a lot of credit to the veteran leadership," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "It's easy at that point to get frustrated, but they made sure that there was no panic."
Later in the period Stephen Werner scored his 4th goal of the season to cut the lead in half. The goal came at 11:02 and was assisted by Marty Guerin and Paul McIlveen.
The Stingrays got the tying goal 14:00 when newcomer Andrew Gordon got his 1st goal as a member of the Rays, an unassisted short hander.
"I knew that if we could tie the game up, we would win. But in order to tie up the game, we were going to need someone to step up, and Gordon did that."
After 60 minutes the score was still tied up at 2. Although both teams had great chances in overtime, neither team could end the game, so they went to a shoot out.
In the 1st round of the shoot out Pierre-Luc O'Brien got the Stingrays up a goal getting it passed Miika Wiikman. Nathan Gillies tied the shootout at 1 in the 4th round. After the 5 rounds, the shoot out was tied up at 1. In the 6th round Josh Johnson stopped Blake Bellefeuille to give the Rays a chance to win it. Werner made the best of that chance, and scored the game winning shoot out goal.
The winning goaltender was Johnson who made 25 saves on 27 shots, and 5 saves in 6 shoot out attempts. The losing goaltender was Wiikman who made 28 saves on 30 shots, and stopped 4 of 6 shoot out attempts. The Rays went 0 for 9 on the power play and killed off 7 of 8 short handed situations.
The Stingrays welcome Mississippi back into the coliseum on Sunday the 11th for their next home game. Don't forget that kids under 12 get in on Sundays for just $5.00 and everyone is welcome to skate with the Rays after the game. Game time will be at 4:00 P.M.
