
Wellwood Named AHL Rookie of the Month

The American Hockey League announced today that St. John's Maple Leafs center Kyle Wellwood has been named AHL Rookie of the Month for November. Wellwood recorded 14 points (2G,12A) and registered 25 shots on net in 14 games.
Wellwood's month saw him tally points in 11 of the 14 games he played. He recorded three multiple point games and his first game with a goal and an assist in the Maple Leafs 6-4 win over Toronto back on November 1st. Kyle Wellwood is currently on a seven-game point streak (G,8A) and also had a six-game assist streak (8A) snapped last game. Wellwood leads the Maple Leafs, AHL Rookies and is tied for fourth overall in the League with 21 points (3G,18A) in 24 games. Wellwood also leads the AHL in assists.
In 2002-03 Wellwood recorded 100 points (41G,59A) and had 0 penalty minutes in 57 games for the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL. That season he received the William Hanley Trophy as the OHL's Most Sportsmanlike Player.
Kyle Wellwood was Toronto's 5th choice, 134th overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Wellwood was a part of Canada's Silver Medal performance at the 2003 World Junior Hockey Championships. This is Wellwood's second Rookie of the Month nomination.
St. John's next game is this Wednesday night when the Maple Leafs face the Cleveland Barons. The game will be broadcast LIVE on Radio NL (930AM) and www.sjmapleleafs.ca at 8:30pm (NT).
