Norfolk Finishes Week with Win, Loss and Tie

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Blue and Gold faced division foes Hershey and Philadelphia for three games last week, coming away with a win, a loss and a tie. The Admirals posted 20 shots and three goals in the third period to come from behind and pick up a 4-4 tie against Philadelphia on Wednesday, November 26. On Friday, November 28, netminder Steve Passmore made 29 saves to earn the shutout victory as the Admirals snuck by Hershey 1-0. The following evening, the Bears outshot Norfolk 38-32 as they eked out a 2-1 win at the Giant Center.

The Admirals play a home-and-home series against the Phantoms (Philadelphia Flyers) this weekend. The squads meet in Philadelphia on Friday, December 5 for a 7:05 p.m. match up before facing off again at Norfolk Scope on Saturday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m.

The Admirals are currently sixth in the East Division with 20 points (7-12-3-3). They trail Hershey (13-5-3-2, 31 points), Bridgeport (13-3-3-1, 30 points), Binghamton (11-7-2-2, 26 points), Philadelphia (11-8-3-1, 26 points) and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (8-9-2-2, 20 points), and are followed by Albany (6-9-3-1, 16 points).

THE WEEK AHEAD

The clubs are 1-1-1-0 against each other this season. The Phantoms lead the AHL with 650 penalty minutes, 28.26 PIM per game, 175 minor penalties, 36 major penalties and 22 power play goals. Their power play unit is tops in the League (20.2) while their penalty killers are 14th (85.8). The Phantoms have outscored their opponents 32-16 in the second period, but have been outscored 15-12 in the first period and 22-20 in the third period. Kirby Law is the team's scoring leader with 10+13=23 points, and he is tied with Jeff Hamilton (BRI) for third in the League in scoring. Mark Murphy leads the squad with eight goals, and former Admiral Peter White has the most assists on the club (15). White has 21 points (six goals) while Mike Peluso, another former Norfolk skater, has 7+7=14 points. Dennis Seidenberg 's plus-10 rating is best on the Phantoms and Wade Skolney's minus-5 rating is the lowest. Peter Vandermeer's 161 PIM are most on Philadelphia as well as in the entire AHL. The goaltending tandem is comprised of Antero Niitymaki (14 GPI, 5-4-3, 2.28 GAA, .916 spct.) and Neil Little (11 GPI, 6-5-0, 2.10 GAA, .917 spct.). Little is 12th and Niitymaki is 15th in the League in GAA.

* Toys for Tots collection. Fans are encouraged to bring a new unwrapped toy to the game for the U.S. Marines' Toys for Tots program. The Marines will have collection bins near the entrances to Scope.

Wednesday, December 10 (Worcester IceCats) - Friday, December 12 (Hershey Bears)

* Pucks for Joy. The Admirals players' wives and girlfriends will once again be selling wrapped autographed pucks to benefit The Joy Fund. The special pucks will be available outside Gate 14 at Scope while they last.

Friday, December 12 (Hershey Bears) - Saturday, December 13 (Philadelphia Phantoms)

*Appearing at Scope both nights will be that jolly ol' elf himself, Santa. Fans can have a picture taken with St. Nick for just $1.00.

Saturday, December 13 (Philadelphia Phantoms)

* Fourth Annual Toy Toss. For the fourth straight year, the Blue and Gold will feature a toy toss. Fans can bring a new plush toy to the game and toss it onto the ice following the Admirals' first goal. The toys will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House and the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters (CHKD). Teddy bears will also be available for purchase at Scope that evening to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. (If the Admirals don't score, the Toy Toss will take place after the game once the players exit the ice.)

TEAM NOTEBOOK

* With a tie (4-4 at Philadelphia November 26) and a win (1-0 vs. Hershey November 28) last week, Norfolk matched its season high with a three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1-0 November 22 to November 28).

* RW Ty Jones scored his first goal of the season on November 28 to give the Admirals a 1-0 win over Hershey.

* Norfolk's 2-1 loss at Hershey on November 29 marked the first regulation loss for the Admirals this year after scoring the game's first goal. They were 7-0-1-1 in nine prior contests when lighting the lamp first.

* Former Admiral Kyle Calder scored his team-leading eighth goal of the year for Chicago in the Blackhawks' 3-1 loss at Los Angeles on November 29.
