
Leafs' Wellwood named AHL Rookie of the Month

SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that St. John's Maple Leafs center Kyle Wellwood has been named the AHL Rookie of the Month for November. In 14 games, Wellwood scored two goals and added 12 assists for 14 points as the Maple Leafs stayed in the hunt in the competitive North Division.
Wellwood recorded a point in 11 of 14 games and finished November with a seven-game scoring streak, the second-longest active streak in the AHL. He recorded a goal and an assist in a 4-3 victory at Binghamton on Nov. 1, the first of his three multiple-point efforts on the month. The native of Windsor, Ont., added two assists vs. Grand Rapids on Nov. 22, and two more helpers at Cleveland on Nov. 28.
In recognition of his accomplishment, Wellwood will be presented with an etched crystal trophy by the AHL prior to an upcoming game.
A fifth-round pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, the 20-year-old Wellwood leads the American Hockey League with 18 assists on the season, and is tops among AHL rookies with 21 points. A silver medalist with Canada at the 2003 World Junior Championships, Wellwood twice topped 100 points in his junior career, and was the Ontario Hockey League scoring champion in 2000-01.
Other nominees for AHL Rookie of the Month for November include Albany right wing Aleksander Suglobov, Bridgeport goaltender Wade Dubielewicz, Chicago goaltender Kari Lehtonen, Cincinnati left wing Chris Kunitz, Cleveland goaltender Dimitri Patzold, Hamilton center Chris Higgins, Hartford center Dominic Moore, Houston right wing Matt Foy, Lowell defenseman Brad Fast, Manchester left wing Noah Clarke, Manitoba defenseman Tomas Mojzis, Norfolk left wing Matt Ellison, San Antonio left wing Josh Olson, Springfield left wing Martin Podlesak and Syracuse right wing Joe Motzko.
