Red Wings Sign Blake Sloan

Detroit, MI...Detroit Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland today announced that the club has signed right wing Blake Sloan to a one-year contract. In keeping with club policy, additional terms of the contract were not disclosed. Sloan has been playing for the Red Wings' American Hockey League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, under an AHL contract.

"Given the injuries we have had this season and the strong performances Blake had produced in Grand Rapids, we felt that he would be a solid addition to the Red Wings," said Holland. "He has over 250 games of NHL experience and will provide our club with the depth needed to compete at a high level throughout the 82-game season."

Never drafted, Sloan was signed as a free agent by Dallas in 1998 following four seasons with the University of Michigan and one year with the Houston Aeros (IHL). He appeared in 19 Stanley Cup Playoff games (0-2-2) during the Stars run to the Stanley Cup Championship in 1999. He also appeared in 16 playoff games with the Stars in 2001. Sloan was claimed on waivers by Columbus in 2001, and traded to Calgary for Jamie Allison in 2002.

In seven games since joining the Griffins on November 18th, Sloan has tallied four goals and two assists for six points, four penalty minutes, a +six rating and two game-winning goals Sloan's career NHL totals are 262 games, 11 goals, 32 assists, 43 points, and 155 penalty minutes.
