December 1, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release

It was a record-setting week for one member of the Manitoba Moose despite the team only gaining a split of a two-game series with their North Division rivals, the Toronto Roadrunners. After a 4-2 defeat on Saturday afternoon at the Arena, Jimmy Roy scored his sixth goal of the season and 75th career goal as a Manitoba Moose, setting a new record for the most goals all-time by a Moose player in a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon. The six goals by Roy this year, the AHL's Man of the Year in 2003, surpassed his total from last season through 50 games. The seven-year veteran now stands one goal ahead of former Moose Greg Pankewicz who scored 74 goals in two seasons with Manitoba from 1996-98. The series split leaves the Moose two points up on the Roadrunners for sixth in the North Division with a record of 7-11-3-1. They are four points back of the Cleveland Barons and Syracuse Crunch for fourth.

This week, Manitoba will wrap up this six-game homestand when they host former captain Brian Chapman and the Rochester Americans. The Amerks are tied for second in the North Division with a record of 9-7-4-1 for 23 points. Game times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday, December 5 and Saturday, December 6. Friday's game can be seen locally on SHAW Cable TV.

Last Week (1-1-0)

Saturday, November 29/03 – Toronto 4 @ Manitoba 2: The Moose had their modest three game winning streak snapped when the Toronto Roadrunners blew through Winnipeg Arena Saturday afternoon with a 4-2 triumph. The win moved Toronto into a tie for sixth with Manitoba in the North Division. Defenceman Doug Lynch opened the scoring four minutes into the game, converting a nice touch pass from Tony Salmelainen in the goal crease, but Fedor Fedorov knotted it up with his eighth of the season past Michael Morrison before the period was out. However, Toronto's Jamie Wright took over in the middle frame, scoring a pair of goals including a shorthanded penalty shot when he beat Alex Auld stickside after being hauled down by Tomas Mojzis. Pat Kavanagh cut the deficit to one with two and a half minutes left in the second period. In the third, Mike Bashai added the insurance marker the Roadrunners wouldn't need when he banged it past Auld from in tight. Morrison stopped 31 shots for the win while Auld stopped 23 in defeat. The loss dropped Manitoba at least five games below .500 for the seventh time already this young season. 3 Stars: 1.Jamie Wright; 2.Tony Salmelainen; 3.Pat Kavanagh.

Sunday, November 30/03 - Toronto 1 @ Manitoba 3: The Moose gained a split with the Roadrunners thanks to a record-setting afternoon for Moose veteran Jimmy Roy. His sixth of the season and 75th career goal proved the winner in the second period as Roy became the all-time leader in goals scored as a Moose. He made nifty backhand to forehand move at the top of the crease to lift it by Steve Valiquette and make it 2-1 Moose at the time. Jaroslav Obsut opened the scoring with his fifth of the season, putting a backhand past a screened Valiquette. However, Tony Salmelainen would tie it for the visitors off a faceoff late in the first period. After Roy's dramatics in the middle frame, Pat Kavanagh scored his fourth of the year into an empty-net shorthanded as Manitoba won its fourth on home-ice this season. Tyler Moss made his first start in net for Manitoba since November 7 and stopped 23 shots for the victory. Valiquette made 26 saves in defeat. The Moose moved two points back up on Toronto for sixth with 18 points. 3 Stars: 1.Jimmy Roy; 2.Tony Salmelainen; 3.Tyler Moss.
