Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
Red Deer, AB - The Moose Jaw Warriors secured another hard-fought road win on Saturday night in Red Deer.
Ryder Korczak scored twice, while Connor Ungar made 41 saves as the Warriors upended the Rebels, 5-2, at the Peavey Mart Centrium.
"They do a good job of being disciplined to the way they play and I thought we did a good job tonight being disciplined in our own system," Warriors assistant coach Gord Burnett said.
Saturday's win was the fifth straight for the Warriors as they've went 5-1 on their seven-game road trip, which wraps up on Sunday in Calgary.
"It's never easy to go on the road," Burnett said. "We're happy with their performance and proud of the way they've played.
Ungar was stellar against his former team, coming up with big saves throughout the night, including 19 stops in the second period alone.
"He was incredible again tonight," Burnett said. "In the second period, we gave up a lot of shots, a lot on the power play and again he was one of our best players and we needed that."
The Warriors struck quickly in the game as Brayden Yager snapped home his 15th of the season only 1:28 into the first period.
On that goal, Jagger Firkus registered an assist, giving him a 20-game point streak with set the modern era record for longest point streak in franchise history.
The score remained 1-0 for the Warriors after one, but Mats Lindgren scored just 36 seconds into the middle frame to tie the game.
Moose Jaw responded midway through the period with Matthew Gallant burying a point shot for his first of the season.
Just 4:46 later, Max Wanner scored a highlight reel goal to give the Warriors a two-goal lead heading into the third.
The Rebels scored in the opening minute for the second straight period when Christoffer Sedoff found the back of the net only 33 seconds into the third.
The Warriors responded again midway through the period when Korczak scored his fifth of the season. He would add an empty net goal with 2:27 to play, sealing the win.
Moose Jaw was outshot in the game 43-21, but won the special teams battle as they finished 5-for-5 on the penalty kill and 0-for-2 on the power play.
Going into Calgary on Sunday, the Warriors will be aiming to finish their road trip on a high note. Burnett said it will be a good test for the squad.
"It's an opportunity for them to continue this in Calgary," he said. "It's a challenge to the guys to go play a good hockey team and prove to themselves that on short rest they can still stick in there and win a hockey game."
The Warriors and Hitmen face-off at 3 p.m. CST on Sunday. Tune into all the action on Country 100 and WHL Live, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 2:40 p.m.
