Late Power Play Vaults Tigers to 1st Win in Calgary

December 3, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Calgary, AB - Thanks to a late goal on the power play from Brenden Lee (Seattle, WA) the Medicine Hat Tigers secured their first win of the season against the Calgary Hitmen Friday night at Scotiabank Saddledome.

The Tigers scored the opening marker thanks to Dru Krebs (Okotoks, AB) sneaking in a shot past Hitmen starter Ethan Buenaventura, to give the road team their first lead at 8:21, Brayden Boehm (Nanaimo, BC) & Dallon Melin (Czar, AB) would chip in on Krebs' second goal of the season. The Tigers would pile on the shots but could solve Buenaventura the rest of the period outshooting Calgary 15-5 after 1.

Off to the second period and Tigers relentless pressure lead to two opportunities, first thanks to a Reid Andresen (Saskatoon, SK) stretch pass to Andrew Basha (Calgary, AB) scored his 7th of the year on a breakaway just 1:11 into the period to give Medicine Hat a 2-0 lead. The Tigers would stay on the Hitmen and score again at 3:59 thanks to a Andresen point shot for his 5th of the season to make it 3-0.

But the Hitmen would find momentum just under five minutes later at 8:47 as Carson Wetsch would score his 5th on an odd man rush to get Calgary on the board at 3-1. Then the Hitmen kept coming under two minutes later as David Adaszynski would score his 3rd and second straight game against Medicine Hat to cut the Tiger lead to 3-2. Calgary would cash in again just 1:15 later at 11:31 as Brandon Whynott would bang in a net front rebound to tie the game at 3-3. Setting up an all square third period, the 3-3 score after forty saw Calgary outshoot Medicine Hat 15-14.

Off to the third period and Beckett Langkow (Vegreville, AB) would stand tall stopping 19 Hitmen shots and giving the Tigers a late opportunity on a shortened power play with less than 2 minutes to go and Brenden Lee hit his league leading 10th powerplay goal with 1:39 in regulation picking an almost impossible angle to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead. Tyler Mackenzie (Red Deer, AB) & Andresen would help set up the eventual game winning goal.

Calgary would pull the goaltender but Langkow and the Tigers held on to a 4-3 win on the road to improve their record to 9-12-4-1 and end up outshooting the Hitmen 47-39 and winning the special teams battle going 1/6 on the power play and having a clean sheet being 4/4 on the penalty kill.

Tigers 2022 Draft Pick Hayden Harsanyi (Calgary, AB) would skate in his first WHL game and start with fellow Calgarians Andrew Basha and Oasiz Wiesblatt.

Next up for the Tigers is the Teddy Bear Toss game at home to Saskatoon Saturday Night at Co-op Place. You can get your tickets at tixx.ca or visiting the Co-op Place Box Office. The Teddy Bear Toss will benefit four local charities in the Medicine Hat Health Foundation, The Santa Claus Fund, The Salvation Army & Women Hat Women's Shelter.
