Warriors Upended by Blades in Saskatoon

Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

A tight game through two periods turned in Saskatoon's favour late on a couple bad breaks for the Moose Jaw Warriors.

The Blades scored three times in the third, handing the Warriors a 4-1 loss at SaskTel Centre on Friday night.

"We're not too happy," Warriors forward Eric Alarie said after the loss. "It felt like a playoff game, everything was close to the end and I don't think the score indicates how the game was played."

The loss drops the Warriors to just one point ahead of the Blades for fourth place in the Eastern Conference and home ice advantage in the first round of the 2022 WHL Playoffs.

Alarie had Moose Jaw's lone goal, tying the game midway through the second period.

"It's super tough to lose those games, but I love to play in these games, and hopefully next time, we can get on top," he said.

The game was scoreless after a very tight first period that saw both sides trying to find their footing.

Saskatoon benefited from three power play opportunities in the second period and opened the scoring on a power play goal by Tristen Robins just before the midway point of the frame.

Moose Jaw answered back less than four minutes later when Alarie forced a turnover inside the Warriors' zone and broke away to wire home his 21st of the season.

The Warriors killed off a five-on-three power play for Saskatoon late in the second period and sent the game into the third tied at 1-1.

The game remained tight with chances at both ends early in the third, but Saskatoon got a break with 8:04 gone in the frame when Egor Sidorov scored to break up the tie.

The Blades were called for goaltender interference on the goal, but the officials upheld the goal.

Moose Jaw couldn't capitalize on the ensuing power play and the Blades put the game away with goals 12 seconds apart from Sidorov and Kyle Crnkovic to take the win.

"One bounce goes their way and they're up, it could have been the other way, so it could have been either way tonight," Alarie said.

Carl Tetachuk stood on his head in the loss, making 36 saves.

"He made some huge saves on the PK for us," Burnett said. "Those are some really big saves that definitely gave us a chance in the third."

While Tetachuk was stellar, the Warriors didn't make the night as difficult on Saskatoon netminder Nolan Maier as they were outshot 40-19 on the night.

Burnett said the Warriors tried to make the extra play one too many times in the game.

"You just encouraged them to shoot the puck a little bit when they come back and hopefully on the next look, they do and I can't fault them for trying to make plays, but at the same time you want to get the puck on," he said.

Moose Jaw finished the night 0-for-1 on the power play and put up a 4-for-5 night on the penalty kill.

The Warriors will return to the ice on Saturday night to take on the Winnipeg ICE at Mosaic Place in the final home game of the regular season.

It's Yara Awards Night as the Warriors honour this season's top performers prior to the game. The ceremony starts at 6:50 p.m.
