Comeback Effort Falls Short as Americans Lose 6-4 to Seattle

April 2, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Tri-City Americans News Release

The Tri-City Americans hit the road today for their final game in Kent this season. After falling behind 5-0, Tri-City scored four straight and nearly made a full comeback against the Thunderbirds. They ultimately fell short, losing to the Thunderbirds 6-4.

15-year-old Americans forward Jordan Gavin joined the Americans today as an affiliate player after recently completing his U17 season with Delta Hockey Academy. Gavin put the Americans on the board tonight with his first ever Western Hockey League goal, sparking Tri-City's comeback effort.

Seattle opened scoring six minutes into the game with a shorthanded goal from Lukas Svejkovsky. The Thunderbirds went on to add three more first period goals to take a dominate 4-0 lead over the Americans into the first intermission. Their momentum seemed to continue as Henrik Rybinski added a goal just nine seconds into the next period.

Tri-City got on the board less than two minutes later as Parker Bell set up Jordan Gavin on an odd man rush and Gavin scored under the glove of Seattle netminder Scott Rattzlaff. It was Gavin's first WHL goal in just his sixth career game.

The Surrey, B.C. native was selected second overall by the Americans in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.

Gavin's goal sparked momentum for the Americans. Tyson Greenway scored later in the second period cutting away at Seattle's lead. The goal was deflected off a shot from Rhett Melnyk. Greenway now has goals in back-to-back games.

Seattle took a 5-2 lead into the third period.

Tri-City's scoring continued as Drew Freer intercepted in the neutral zone and passed to Ethan Ernst who scored with a wrist shot from the right circle. The assist was Freer's first point in the WHL.

The score held at 5-3 until late in the period. While playing four-on-four, the Americans pulled netminder Tomas Suchanek for an extra attacker. Marc Lajoie capitalized on the opportunity and put the Americans within one goal of the Thunderbirds with a minute remaining.

Tri-City's was unable to complete the comeback as Svejkovsky added an empty net goal for the Thunderbirds, giving them a final 6-4 victory.

Score: 6-4 Seattle

Shots: 42-32 Seattle

Tri-City will return to the Toyota Center tomorrow as they take on the Everett Silvertips.
