Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
Regina, SK - The Regina Pats opened the scoring, but it was all Moose Jaw after that on Friday night.
The Warriors scored six straight goals between the first and second periods to cruise to a 9-5 win over the Pats at the Brandt Centre.
"With all the fans here and how loud it got after they scored that opening goal, we never gave up, we kept going and we were resilient tonight," Warriors forward Jagger Firkus said after the win.
Firkus finished with a hat trick and four points to lead the way for the Warriors, while Atley Calvert and Ryder Korczak added a goal and three points each.
Brayden Yager chipped in with three assists in the win.
"I thought we did a really good job of managing our emotions and just sticking with it," Warriors assistant coach Scott King said. "Anytime you can put that many up on the board, it's a good thing."
Regina opened the scoring when Connor Bedard found the back of the net just before the midway point of the first period.
Just over four minutes later, the Warriors answered back with a shorthanded goal from Josh Hoekstra, his ninth of the season and second shorthanded marker in the last three games.
That got the ball rolling downhill for the Warriors and Korczak potted his 26th of the season 1:40 later to put Moose Jaw in front for good.
Less than two minutes later, Firkus broke in on a breakaway and buried his 34th of the season to make it 3-1 after one.
Only 1:39 into the second period, Yager stole the puck in the neutral zone and Firkus finished for his second of the night.
Less than five minutes after that, Martin Rysavy turned on the jets to score his 10th of the season and putting the Warriors in front 5-1.
Atley Calvert extended the lead to five goals when he tapped in his 37th of the season with less than eight minutes left in the second.
Regina pushed back with back-to-back goals from Bedard to make it 6-3, but the Warriors answered right back only 21 seconds after the second goal when Eric Alarie scored his 19th of the season to make it 7-3 after two.
The teams traded goals in the third period with Riley Ginnell cutting into the lead for Regina, but Logan Dowhaniuk answering again for Moose Jaw.
Alexander Suzdalev scored a power play goal with 4:01 left in regulation, but Firkus finished off the hat trick with a power play goal in the final minute to seal the win.
"We were just creating turnovers and scoring on our chances," Firkus said.
The Warriors outshot the Pats 40-26 in the win.
On special teams, Moose Jaw was 1-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The Warriors and Pats will now meet for a rematch at a sold out Moose Jaw Events Centre on Saturday night.
