Birds Top Hawks 5-2, Rematch in Portland Tomorrow

Portland Winterhawks News Release

Kent, Wash. - Goals from Jack O'Brien and Josh Zakreski kept the Winterhawks (39-18-4-3) close through 40 minutes, but four goals in the final two periods helped the Thunderbirds (51-9-1-2) to a 5-2 win on Friday night.

Seattle took an initial lead two minutes into the tilt on Mekai Sanders' fifth of the year, but the Hawks soon responded with O'Brien's power-play strike. As Luca Cagnoni cycled the puck over to James Stefan at the right circle, O'Brien emerged in the slot for a deflection that found its way past Scott Ratzlaff to tie the game.

The T-Birds again broke the tie early in the second when Dylan Guenther found twine, then doubled their lead six minutes later as Luke Prokop lit the lamp. Pushing late, Portland returned to the scoresheet when Zakreski banked a shot in at 15:35 to get his team within a goal, but a Kevin Korchinski strike sent Seattle into the break up by two. Another early strike in the third period from Brad Lambert made it a three-goal lead, and the T-Birds held on from there for a 5-2 win.

The Winterhawks and Thunderbirds face off again during Oregon Hockey History Night at the VMC tomorrow night at 6:00 P.M.
