Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - Brayden Peters shut the door for the Calgary Hitmen preserving a 2-0 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers Saturday night at Co-op Place.
It was a tough first period for the Tigers as the Hitmen took it to the home side firing 14 shots including two power play opportunities but Tigers goaltender Beckett Langkow (Vegreville, AB) would stand tall turning every puck away. Calgary thought they had scored via Riley Fiddler-Schultz but another successful Offside Challenge by the Tigers coaching staff would benefit Medicine Hat as negate the opening goal of the 1st. The Tigers would get a late power play in the first but were unable to solve Brayden Peters in the Hitmen net. The first would conclude in a scoreless draw with the Hitmen outshooting the Tigers 14-6.
The Tigers would start the second period in a better spot able to create a handful of scoring opportunities but couldn't solve Peters despite point black chances by Pasha Bocharov (Escondido, CA) & Andrew Basha (Calgary, AB) and a Hunter St. Martin penalty would put the Hitmen up 1-0 on Carter Yakemchuk's 17th of the season finding the top corner past a screened Beckett Langkow at 16:14 would help the Hitmen carry that same lead heading to the third.
Despite a push back from the Tigers and plenty of chances, they wouldn't be able to solve Peters and Sean Tschigerl would put things away with the goaltender pulled with 36 second left to insure the Hitmen's 28th of the season.
Beckett Langkow would go on make 29 saves on the night in the loss while Peters with his 23 stops on the Tigers would get his 3rd shutout of the year setting up a Sunday afternoon showdown where 7th place hangs in the balance in the Eastern Conference.
With the loss the Tigers drop to 28-27-8-1 and just one point up on the Hitmen for 7th in the Eastern Conference with 65 points, the Hitmen are just one point back of Medicine Hat with 64.
The Tigers weren't able to cash in on the power Saturday going 0/4 against Calgary while giving up one power play goal for a 5/6 effort on the penalty kill.
It's a tight turn for Medicine Hat as they'll make their way to Calgary for a 4 PM puck drop at the Scotiabank Saddledome. You can catch the game live on the home of the Tigers WILD 94.5 with Gino De Paoli, starting with the pre-game show at 3:45.
