March 18, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
Tonight
The Saskatoon Blades (45-14-4-1) look to play spoiler against the Brandon Wheat Kings (26-31-8-0) Saturday at SaskTel Centre.
The visitors are fighting tooth and nail for a postseason spot, currently two points back of the final spot with 60 points. Saskatoon on the other hand is feeling good after a 3-2 victory vs the Swift Current Broncos Wednesday night at InnovationPlex. The decision marked the Blades eighth consecutive road win and bumped them up to 95 points with four games remaining. The Blades are locked at third place in the Eastern Conference and hope to stay hot as they await who their first-round opponent will be.
Tonight's the final regular season encounter between the two East Division teams. Saskatoon has won all five previous meetings and look for a series sweep. The last victory came Feb. 5th on home ice during their "Kids Takeover" game which say former Wheat King Jake Chiasson pot the game winner in a 4-2.
Who to Watch
20-year-old defenceman Aidan De La Gorgendiere scored his 12th goal of the season vs the Broncos Wednesday. The 6-foot-1 Langley, BC. native is averaging a point-per game in his final WHL season with 62 in as many outings. De La Gorgendiere is four points away from claiming sole possession of tenth for points by a defenceman in Blades' history currently at 152 in 245 games.
Alternate captain Trevor Wong recorded three points in Swift Current last time out. The Vancouver, BC. product's two helpers in the game marked WHL career assists 99 and 100 in less than 200 games. A 19-year-old speedster, Wong has exploded offensively for the Blue and Gold this season with 24 goals and 81 points in 64 games.
NHL draft-eligible defenceman Tanner Molendyk is living up to the hype. The highly touted blueliner for McBride, BC. scored goal nine of the campaign in Wednesday's win with a filthy move in front of the Broncos' crease. In 63 games, the silky-skating defenceman has 36 points and leads the team at +34.
These game worn jerseys will be auctioned off with 100% of proceeds going to President's Choice Children's Charity to help feed one million kids each year!
Auction begins at 7:00pm tonight and ends at 12:00pm Friday, Mar. 24th.
