Warriors Capture Key Win in Lethbridge
January 5, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release
The Moose Jaw Warriors went into Lethbridge and came away with a hard fought two points.
The Warriors scored four straight goals in the first and second periods to skate to a 5-3 win over the Hurricanes.
"I like the fact that we stuck with it tonight, it's a tough building to play in, that's a good, heavy team, so we knew we had to match their physicality and we did that," Warriors assistant coach Scott King said.
Atley Calvert picked up two goals and two assists to match a career-high with four points in the win, while Eric Alarie also scored twice for the Warriors.
King said Moose Jaw did a good job of attacking off the rush throughout the game.
"We were fortunate to turn some pucks around, transition, go the other way and some guys made some real nice plays there, King said. "We'll take it tonight, we knew it wasn't going to be easy and it wasn't."
The Warriors fell behind early in the game when Jett Jones scored just 7:27 into the first to put Lethbridge in front.
Moose Jaw responded about five minutes later when Max Wanner took a feed Brayden Yager and rifled home his seventh of the season.
With the game tied, the Warriors found momentum and took the lead when Calvert scored his 18th of the season with 1:17 to play in the first.
Alarie scored his first of the night, burying a chance all along in the slot to make it 3-1 only 2:40 into the second.
Calvert added to the lead with his second of the night on the power play midway through the middle frame.
Anton Astashevich scored for the Hurricanes late in the second to cut Moose Jaw's lead to 4-2 after two.
Lethbridge scored midway through the third to make it a one-goal game, but Alarie answered for the Warriors finishing off a great passing play only 1:02 later to seal the win.
Moose Jaw went 1-for-4 on the power play and finished 0-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Connor Ungar stopped 19-of-22 shots in the win, as Moose Jaw outshot Lethbridge 29-22 on the night.
"Lots to build on, it was a pretty solid 60 minutes," King said.
The Warriors are now 23-13-0-0 and hold a two-point lead over the Calgary Hitmen for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Those two teams will meet at the Hangar on Friday night.
