
Kisio Captures Gold at World Junior Championship

LETHBRIDGE, AB - The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club would like to congratulate Hurricanes head coach Brent Kisio and the 2023 Men's U20 National Junior Team on capturing gold at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Kisio, 40, served as an assistant coach for Team Canada at the tournament. The gold medal for the Calgary, AB, product marks his second gold as a Canadian coach, previously serving as the head coach of the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup U18 team that won gold in Slovakia. He also earned a silver medal at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge when he served as an assistant coach for the Canada Pacific U17 team.
The gold medal for Canada marks the 20th time the country has won gold at the World Juniors and seventh time that Canada has captured gold on home soil. It is also the first time the Canadians have repeated as gold medalists since 2009 when Canada won their fifth consecutive gold in Ottawa, Ontario.
The 2023 tournament marked the second time Kisio was on the staff of the National Junior team after serving as an assistant coach in 2019 in Vancouver when the Canadians lost in the quarter finals. He is the winningest coach in Hurricanes history with 251 career coaching victories and is the longest serving active head coach in the entire Western Hockey League. Kisio becomes the first Hurricane representative to win gold at the World Junior Championship since Dylan Cozens and Calen Addison helped Canada win gold at the 2020 tournament in Czechia.
