Regina Pats News Release

Brandon, Man. - The Brandon Wheat Kings beat the Regina Pats 6-2 on Wednesday night at Westoba Place.

The win is the second for the Wheat Kings over the Pats since the end of the Christmas Break in which they have outscored the Pats 10-2. Brandon leads the season series 2-1. The loss dropped the Pats back to .500 on the season.

Brett Hyland led the way for the Wheat Kings with three points on two goals (19th and 20th) and an assist, which extended his point streak to 11 games.

Trae Johnson (second) and Logen Hammett (second) gave the Wheat Kings a 2-0 lead after the first period. Riley Ginnell (sixth) got the Pats on the board early in the second before Hyland scored just over four minutes later to give the Wheat Kings a 3-1 lead heading into the second intermission. Anthony Wilson (fifth), Hyland (second of the game), and Jake Chiasson (10th) scored within a four-minute span midway through the third period to extend the Wheat Kings lead to 6-1 before Zack Stringer scored his first of the season for the Pats to round out the scoring in the 6-2 Wheat Kings win.

Carson Bjarnason stopped 18 of 20 shots for the Wheat Kings in the victory. Drew Sim made 16 saves on 21 Wheat Kings shots before being replaced by Kelton Pyne with 10:39 left in the contest, as he stopped 7 of 8 shots he faced.

THE GOALS

First Period

BDN 0-1 at 3:18 - Trae Johnson (2), assisted by Logen Hammett and Luke Shipley // On a rush led by Hammett, the Wheat Kings came in with speed, and the Brandon defenceman sent a pass to Johnson who one-timed the puck past Sim to open the scoring.

BDN 0-2 at 18:46 - Logen Hammett (2), assisted by Calder Anderson and Brett Hyland // Hammett received a cross-ice pass from Anderson and he skated in along the left wing and fired a shot that beat Sim to give the Wheat Kings a 2-0 lead late in the opening stanza.

Second Period

REG 1-2 at 2:08 - Riley Ginnell (6), assisted by Layton Feist and Corbin Vaughan // Feist's long wrist shot deflected off Ginnell and somehow beat Bjarnason to get the Pats on the board early in the second period, now trailing 2-1.

BDN 1-3 at 6:46 - Brett Hyland (19), assisted by Nolan Ritchie and Calder Anderson (PP) // With the Wheat Kings on the powerplay, Ritchie found Hyland deep in the Pats zone. Hyland was able to skate out in front of Sim and tucked the puck through the Pats' netminder to regain their two-goal lead at 3-1.

Third Period

BDN 1-4 at 8:33 - Anthony Wilson (5), assisted by Roger McQueen // Wilson got the puck along the right boards and just threw it toward the Pats' goal and it eluded Sim who did not seem prepared for any type of shot. That gave the Wheat Kings a 4-1 lead.

BDN 1-5 at 9:21 - Brett Hyland (20), assisted by Nate Danielson and Nolan Ritchie (PP) // Less than a minute later, Hyland cut across the slot and took a wrist shot that beat Sim low to the blocker side to extend the Wheat Kings' lead to 5-1.

BDN 1-6 at 9:21 - Jake Chiasson (10), assisted by Calder Anderson and Nolan Ritchie (PP) // The Wheat Kings worked the puck around the Pats zone and Chiasson grabbed the puck on the right wing and wired the puck past Pyne to give the Wheat Kings a five-goal lead at 6-1.

REG 2-6 at 15:52 - Zack Stringer (1), assisted by Tanner Brown and Tanner Howe (PP) // Brown's point shot was going wide but Stringer, who was standing in his office in front of the Wheat Kings net knocked it down to himself and buried his first of the season to cut the Wheat Kings lead to four at 6-2.
