South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays (17-13-1-5) fell to the Toledo Walleye (23-5-2-2) 4-3 at the North Charleston Coliseum Friday night to kick off a five-game homestand and three-game in three-day weekend. Forward John Mitchell recorded two assists in the loss.
The Walleye broke open the scoring early in the first period as rookie Shane Bershbach beat Stingrays goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (L, 29 saves on 33 shots) at 5:23. The Stingrays responded with a power-play tally from team captain Andrew Rowe at 14:42 redirecting a feed from forward Rob Bellamy past Walleye netminder Jeff Lerg (W, 30 saves on 33 shots). Defenseman Andrew Blazek picked up the second assist.
Stingrays forward Caleb Herbert made it 2-1 midway through the second period curling around the left circle and rifling a shot past Lerg. Mitchell and defenseman Marcus Perrier added assists. The Walleye marched back with two tallies to reclaim the lead heading into the intermission. Forward Kyle Bonis beat Jakaitis catching a bouncing pass for a partial breakaway at 12:27 and forward Justin Mercier knocked in a loose puck at 19:53 for a 3-2 lead.
In the third period, the forward Josh Holmstrom capitalized off a turnover at 7:29 to give the Walleye a two-goal cushion. The Stingrays made it a one-goal game at 16:15 as forward Wayne Simpson buried his 10 goal of the season from Mitchell. With less than two minutes to play, the Stingrays were awarded a man advantage and pulled Jakaitis for a 6-on-4 opportunity, but could not grab the equalizer.
