Walleye Ice Beast 5-2 on a Frozen-Themed New Years Eve
December 31, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release
BRAMPTON - The Brampton Beast (9-17-1) fought hard in a tight game but came up short against the Toledo Walleye (21-5-3) in the second half of a back-to-back series in Brampton. The Beast would tie the game up in the second period but were unable to pull ahead in the third, eventually losing by a score of 5-2.
Once again it was Tyler Donati leading the way on Frozen night with a goal and an assist to extend his point streak to four games. His brother Justin Donati would pick up an assist to continue his point streak to four games as well, while Trevor Cann would make 41 saves in the defeat.
The game got off to a quick start with only two whistles in the first six minutes. Last night's first star of the game Martin Frk got the first goal of the game on snipe from the high slot despite the Beast outshooting Toledo 7-3.
The Walleye quickly made it a two goal lead on a two on one goal by Toledo's leading goal scorer Kyle Bonis with his 15th of the season assisted on a cross-crease pass by Toledo's leading point getter Anthony Luciani with his 32nd point of the season.
With just under two minutes left in the first period, Tyler Donati made it rain stuffed animals on Teddy Bear night at the Powerade Centre, when he scored on a 2-on-1 rush during which he kept the puck and went high glove side on Neil Conway, with Dalton Thrower notching his second pro assist.
Throne and Elbrecht dropped the gloves right after the first Beast goal. The fight was over quickly when the smaller Throne took down Elbrecht to score the win and close out the first period.
Late in the second period Chad Painchaud would step into the top of the circle and fire a shot off the crossbar and into the net to tie the game at two goals apiece. The tally was assisted by Tyler Donati for his second point of the night as well as his brother Justin Donati.
The final frame got off to a quick start, but not the one the Beast hoped for. With the home team on the powerplay, Walleye forward Kyle Rodgers would get a break at the blueline and bury a shorthanded breakaway goal to put the visitors up 3-2.
Justin Mercier would then score back-to-back goals within two-and-a-half minutes to put the Walleye 5-2 and seal the win for Toledo. The Beast will now be taking to the road for a five game road trip, starting on Friday, January 2nd in Tulsa. The Beast return home the weekend of January 16-18 for a three-game set against the Montreal Canadiens affiliate the Wheeling Nailers. Friday's game will feature a Guns and Hoses themed game, where the Brampton Fire and Police Departments will square off in a charity game raising funds for Regen Brampton at 5:30, with puck drop for the Beast at 7:30. Tickets can be purchased online at bramptonbeast.com or by calling 905 564 1684.
