Evansville IceMen News Release
EVANSVILLE, Ind.- A crowd of 8,054 fans packed into the Ford Center to watch the Evansville IceMen, presented Coors Light, battle the Quad City Mallards in a New Year's Eve showdown. Despite their largest crowd since opening night, the IceMen, could not overcome the goaltending of Evan Mosher, as the Mallards shutout Evansville by a score of 3-0.
With the loss, Evansville drops to 9-16-2-2 (22 points). The IceMen will enter the new year four points back of the Wheeling Nailers for a playoff spot in the North Division. Quad City improves to 16-10-3-2 (37 points) to hang onto second place in the Central Division.
Quad City got on the board in the first period. Logan Nelson intercepted a clearing a pass and netted his eighth of the season on a breakaway to put the Mallards up 1-0 entering the first intermission.
Early in the second period, Colin Murray dropped the gloves in his first professional fight. After going to a knee from some Jeff Lee punches, Murray got back to his feet and decked Lee with a huge right hand that sent the Mallard forward to the ice.
Neither team could score in the second period as Chris Driedger denied eight Mallard shots, while Mosher stopped seven IceMen pucks to keep Quad City in front 1-0 entering the final period.
In the third, the Mallards added to their lead. Mike Monfredo slapped in a shot from the blue line that deflected off of Driedger's body and in to give Quad City a 2-0 lead.
Mosher made several stops on a barrage of IceMen shots, including a few attempts from the returning Jarret Lukin. The Quad City goalie turned away 26 shots to earn his first shut out of the season.
With time winding down, Evansville pulled Driedger. Lee scored on the empty net as Mosher picked up the assist on the play that secured the Mallards a 3-0 win. Driedger blocked 24 shots of the 26 Mallard shots he saw, but could not match Mosher's shutout.
The IceMen will clash with the Reading Royals in their first game of 2015 at the Ford Center on Friday Jan. 2. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
