DULUTH, Ga. - The Gladiators announced the hiring of Mike Flanagan as the fourth assistant coach in team history on Wednesday.

Flanagan joins the team after spending two seasons as the head coach of the Valpellice Bulldogs of the Italian Serie A hockey league. Under his direction, Valpellice reached the league finals in 2012-13, going 22-15-3-4. The next season, the team had an even better record at 24-17-0-1.

From 2010 through 2012, Flanagan was the assistant coach to current Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL. In the 2011-12 season, the Admirals won the Calder Cup by winning their last 28-straight games - a North American professional hockey record.

"We are excited to have Mike join our coaching staff. He brings a great deal of coaching experience at the professional level," said Gladiators Interim Head Coach Andy Brandt. "Mike's attention to the small details with the game has helped teams have success as well as develop players to the next level. I'm looking forward to working with him. He is a great addition to our team."

Prior to his time with Norfolk, the Orangeville, Ontario native was the head coach of the Kenai River Brown Bears of the North American Hockey League from 2007 to 2009. He also played professionally as a defenseman from 1989 with the Hampton Roads Admirals of the ECHL, to 1998 with the Nashville Ice Flyers of the Central Hockey League.

Flanagan will join Brandt behind the bench for the Gladiators' next game, this Friday, January 2nd at The Arena at Gwinnett Center. The team will take on the Elmira Jackals at 7:35 p.m.
