Clinton LumberKings News Release

Peoria, IL - The highly anticipated Midwest League debut of Seattle Mariners' 2010 first-round pick Taijuan Walker was quickly spoiled by Rubi Silva and the Peoria Chiefs as they scored four runs over the first two innings and rode that lead to a 4-1 win over the Clinton LumberKings Thursday night at O'Brien Field.

Silva went 1-for-4, but his lone hit was a two-run single to left that scored Pierre LePage and Elliot Soto for the only runs the Chiefs would need all night. After a double by Richard Jones, Silva then scored on a single by Micah Gibbs.

Walker, making his fifth-career appearance and first pro start, started a 1-6-3 double play to get out of the first-inning jam but then found himself in a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the second. He'd allow only one run on Silva's fielder's choice and got out of the inning with a strikeout of Jones. Walker (L, 0-1) settled down over the next two innings and finished with four runs on six hits, two walks and five strikeouts.

The LumberKings struggled offensively yet again as Chiefs' right-hander Hayden Simpson turned in 4.2 scoreless innings. Clinton chased him out of the game as Carlton Tanabe and Julio Morban each singled with two outs in the fifth, but left-hander Eric Jokisch came on and struck out Matt Cerione to strand them both.

At last, the Kings scored their first run of the series in the sixth as Stefen Romero laced a double down the left-field line and scored on a single to left by Mickey Wiswall. Peoria left-fielder D.J. Fitzgerald's throw to the plate was close, but Romero managed to get around Gibbs' tag to score.

Jokisch (W, 4-0) would allow nothing more the rest of the way, finishing with the run on four hits while striking out five over 4.1 innings.

LumberKings' left-hander Edlando Seco struck out five over 3.0 perfect innings and right-hander Tyler Burgoon turned in a scoreless eighth, but the bats couldn't back them late.

Morban (2-for-5), Tanabe (2-for-4) and Wiswall (2-for-4, RBI) all had multi-hit games for the LumberKings, who dropped to 0-5 against the Chiefs this season.

The LumberKings (8-20) finish the series at Peoria (14-13) tomorrow morning at 11:00 AM. Right-hander George Mieses (1-2, 4.01) starts for Clinton while the Chiefs counter with left-hander Austin Kirk (2-1, 2.28). Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
