West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI -- The West Michigan Whitecaps will help raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer on Mothers' Day, Sunday, May 8.

Gates open at noon and the game against the Dayton Dragons begins at 1 p.m. The first 1,000 people through the gates will receive a pink breast cancer awareness t-shirt courtesy of Outback Steakhouse. The Whitecaps will be wearing special Breast Cancer Awareness jerseys during the game and select jerseys, including the jersey worn by Tigers #1 draft pick Nick Castellanos, will be auctioned off during the game to raise money for the Grand Rapids affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

"We are so thrilled to have an organization like the West Michigan Whitecaps want to give back and make a difference in the fight to save lives and end breast cancer," said Emma Powell, Executive Director of the Grand Rapids affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. "This event will be a special day to honor breast cancer survivors and provide a special day to say thank you to moms."

In addition, $45 Outback Steakhouse gift cards will be given away to lucky seat winners, and all pink merchandise and ladies items in the souvenir shop will be 20% off on Sunday. And, if a Whitecaps player hits a grand slam during the sixth inning, one lucky fan will take home $10,000! Sunday is also Helen Devos Children's Hospital Family Day; the first 1,000 kids eat free, families can play catch on the field before the game and participate in the team autograph session on the field, and after the game kids and moms can run the bases.

Approximately 40,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with Breast Cancer each year, and one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. Susan G. Komen For The Cure is the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world, having invested more than $1.9 billion since its inception in 1982. As the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, the foundation is working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.
