
Kernels Win Marathon 4-3 in 17 Innings

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (May 4, 2011)- CF Travis Witherspoon (4-7) lined a single to left field to give the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 4-3 win over the Burlington Bees in 17 innings at Perfect Game Field on Wednesday night.
Burlington scored two runs in the third inning. SS Yordy Cabrera (3-7) led off the inning with a single and scored on a double by 1B Josh Whitaker (1-6). CF Tyreace House (1-6) added an RBI single to score Whitaker and make it 2-0.
The Bees scored a single run in the fourth inning. DH Jose Rivero (1-6) doubled, LF Douglas Landaeta (1-7) grounded out and Cabrera reached on a fielder's choice. It was a 3-0 Burlington lead.
The Kernels started to chip away with a single run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth inning against RHP Blake Hassebrock. He pitched six innings and allowed three runs, (two earned runs), on five hits in a no decision.
Hassebrock started the sixth inning carry a streak of 27.1 innings without allowing an earned run. RF Drew Heid (2-6), Witherspoon (2-5) and 3B Jeremy Cruz (1-6) all singled. Cruz's single scored Heide for the first earned run of the season surrendered by Hassebrock. The Kernels scored another run in the inning to tie the game at 3-3.
In the 17th inning, DH Ricky Alvarez walked and was lifted in favor of pinch-runner Ryan Jones. SS Jean Almanzar (0-6) laid down a sacrifice bunt and RF Drew Heid (2-8) grounded out. Witherspoon singled to left to score the winning run in a game that finished a few minutes shy of being five hours old.
The Bees and Kernels continue three-game series on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. The pitching match-up is as follows: RHP A.J. Griffin (3-0, 1.38) for Burlington against RHP Suammy Baez (1-2, 3.65) for Cedar Rapids. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. on Newsradio 1490 KBUR and online at gobees.com.
