South Bend Silver Hawks (9-16) at Dayton Dragons (14-13)
RH J.R. Bradley (0-4, 5.85) vs. RH Daniel Corcino (3-2, 4.01)
Today's Game: The Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) meet the Silver Hawks (affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks) in the second game of a three-game set. Season Series: South Bend 1, Dayton 0. Streaks: Dayton has lost four straight games overall but won nine of 10 home games.
Last Night: South Bend defeated Dayton 4-1 to take the series opener. Three Silver Hawks pitchers combined to allow just six hits and Yazy Arbelo hit a long home run. Ender Inciarte had three hits and Raywilly Gomez drove in two runs for South Bend. The Dragons were 0 for 7 with men in scoring position and scored their only run on a Dominic D'Anna sacrifice fly. It was the Dragons fourth straight loss, matching their longest losing streak of 2011.
Today's Dragons Starting Pitcher: Daniel Corcino makes his sixth start of the season tonight. Corcino was the winning pitcher Saturday vs. Fort Wayne (6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO). Corcino is a 20-year-old native of the Dominican Republic. He enters the 2011 season rated as the #15 prospect in Reds organization by Baseball America. Corcino has drawn comparisons to fellow Dominican and former Dragon Johnny Cueto because of a fastball that can get into the mid 90 mph range and sub-six foot frame. He began the 2010 season with Billings and made nine starts, going 1-3, 3.40. He joined the Dragons on August 6 and made six starts with Dayton, going 1-1, 4.31. Over his first three starts with Dayton, he allowed just two runs in 16.2 innings, posting a 1.08 ERA.
Manager/Coaches: Delino DeShields is in his first season with the Dragons and third year in the Reds organization. He served as the manager of the Billings Mustangs in the Pioneer League last season, leading the club to a record of 38-37. As a player, DeShields spent 13 years in the Major Leagues from 1990-2002 with the Expos, Dodgers, Orioles, Cardinals, and Cubs. He finished in the top three in the league in stolen bases six times and is 46th on the all-time career list with 463. DeShields hit .290 or higher five times. DeShields finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting in 1990...Pitching coach Tony Fossas is in his third season with the Dragons and third year in the Reds organization. Fossas pitched in the Major Leagues from 1988-1999 as a relief pitcher, appearing in 567 big league games with Boston, St. Louis, and five other clubs...Hitting coach Alex Pelaez is in his first season with the Dragons. He served as the hitting coach with Billings last season. Pelaez played professionally for eight seasons from 1998-2005. He played in the big leagues in 2002 with the San Diego Padres.
