
Bees Get Lucky Break for a 6-5 Win

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (May 5, 2011)- The Burlington Bees (19-7) broke a 5-5 tie when a run scored in the ninth inning on a fielding error for a 6-5 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels (18-9) before 1,281 fans at Perfect Game Field on Thursday night.
Burlington scored two runs in the first inning against Cedar Rapids RHP Suammy Baez. CF Royce Consigli (1-3) doubled and moved to third base on a fly out by 2B Wade Kirkland (0-3). DH Nino Leyja (2-4) doubled and Consigli scored for a 1-0 lead. SS Yordy Cabrera (1-3) doubled home Leyja for a 2-0 lead.
Cedar Rapids scored a single run in the second inning. 1B Brandon Decker (1-4) singled and went to second base on a single by 2B Wes Hatton (2-4). DH Ricky Alvarez (2-3) lined a single to center field to score Decker and make it 2-1.
Alvarez also hit an opposite field home run over the right field wall against Bees RHP A.J. Griffin in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2.
The Kernels scored two runs in the fifth inning to take the lead. C Braulio Pardo (1-3) hit a single and moved into scoring position on a single by RF Drew Heid (2-5). A groundout by CF Travis Witherspoon (0-4) moved both runners into scoring position. LF David Harris (1-3) followed with a bloop double to score two for a 4-2 lead.
The Bees tied the game with two runs in the sixth inning. 3B Tony Thompson (1-3) and Cabrera earned back-to-back two out walks. A wild pitch by Baez allowed both runners to advance into scoring position. RF Jose Rivero (1-4) hit a single to center field to tie the game at 4-4.
The Bees took advantage of some miscues to take the lead in the seventh inning. 1B Josh Whitaker (1-3) singled and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by C Daniel Petitti (0-2). A groundout by Consigli moved Whitaker to third base and he scored on a wild pitch for a 5-4 lead.
Cedar Rapids tied the game with a sacrifice fly by Alvarez to tie the game at 5-5.
Whitaker led off the ninth inning with a single and went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Petitti. CF Tyreace House (0-0), batting for Consigli, walked and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. After 2B Wade Kirkland (0-3) struck out, Leyja reached on a fielding error by Kernels 2B Wes Hatton that allowed Whitaker to score and make it 6-5.
The Bees and Kernels finish their three-game series on Friday at 6:35 p.m. The pitching match-up is as follows: RHP Josh Bowman (3-0, 3.55) for Burlington against RHP Daniel Tillman (3-0, 2.95) for Cedar Rapids. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. on Newsradio 1490 KBUR and online at gobees.com.
