Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs scored four runs in the first two innings and held on for a 4-1 victory over the Clinton LumberKings on Thursday evening. Chiefs' outfielder Rubi Silva went 1-for-4 with a run and three RBI to lead Peoria's offense. The Chiefs improved to 14-13 on the season and are now a perfect 5-0 against the LumberKings this year.
Following a 1:09 rain delay that temporarily postponed the start of the game, Peoria's offense recorded five straight hits off Clinton hurler Taijuan Walker to begin the contest and grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Pierre LePage and Elliot Soto each singled to right field before Rubi Silva knocked a two-run base hit into left-center field. With Silva on first, Richard Jones ripped a double just fair down the first base line followed by a RBI single from Micah Gibbs that scored Silva. It was the seventh RBI of the season for Gibbs, who now has an 11-game hit streak.
The Chiefs' extended their advantage to 4-0 in the second as the first three hitters of the inning reached once again. D.J. Fitzgerald led off with a walk before Anthony Giansanti blooped a base hit into shallow left-center field. LePage followed that up with another walk to load the bases. After Soto grounded out, Silva grounded into a 4-6 fielders' choice that simultaneously scored Fitzgerald from third for Silva's third RBI of the game and 13th of the year.
Clinton got on the board for the first time in the series off of Chiefs' hurler Eric Jokisch in the sixth inning. Jokisch, who replaced starter Hayden Simpson with two outs in the fifth, gave up a double to Stefan Romero followed by a RBI base hit to left field from Mickey Wiswall that scored Romero from second.
Simpson went 4 2/3 innings and allowed no runs, four hits, and two walks in a no-decision. He also struck out one batter in his sixth start of the season. Jokisch (4-0) earned the win as he pitched the final 4 1/3 innings. He allowed one run on three hits and a walk while striking out three.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Rubi Silva (CF) - Silva went 1-for-4 on the night with a run scored and three RBI highlighted by his two-run base hit in the first inning. It was his first RBI since April 20 at Quad Cities and now has a team-leading five multiple-RBI games.
