Lansing Lugnuts News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - A day after getting routed 12-2, the Fort Wayne TinCaps (11-17) exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning en route to handing the Lansing Lugnuts (17-10) a humbling 12-4 loss on Thursday night at Parkview Field.
Tommy Medica and Jake Blackwood each notched three of Fort Wayne's 13 base hits, with Medica and Chris Bisson driving in three runs apiece. The entire TinCaps starting lineup save for Chris Tremblay hit safely, with Tremblay picking up the slack with two walks and two runs scored.
Lugnuts starter Casey Lawrence (Loss, 2-3) absorbed the brunt of the damage, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. Lawrence left the game with the score tied at 4-4 and one out in the sixth inning, yielding to reliever Alex Pepe with runners at second and third.
Then the wheels fell off.
Pepe tossed a pair of run-scoring wild pitches and walked off the mound five batters later having recorded only one further out while allowing two walks, a Bisson two-run single and a Rymer Liriano RBI double. amid a two-walk, two-hit, four-run showing in just one-third of inning.
Sam Strickland relieved Pepe in time to allow a Blackwood RBI single before mercifully gaining the final out of the frame.
Medica finished off the scoring with a two-run double off of Strickland in the eighth inning.
In all, the Lugnuts' tandem of Pepe and Strickland allowed six runs on six hits and five walks in 2 2/3 innings. The bullpen had entered the game having only surrendered one earned run over its past 27.0 innings dating back eight games.
Fort Wayne reliever Matt Jackson (Win, 2-0) picked up the victory in relief of starting pitcher Andrew Werner (5.0 innings, five hits, three runs, two walks, five strikeouts). Jackson briefly allowed the Lugnuts a 4-3 lead on a Jake Marisnick solo home run leading off the sixth before retiring the final 12 outs in succession.
Marisnick went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the loss, increasing his league-leading RBI total to 25.
Before the game, Lugs third baseman Bryson Namba was informed that he has been suspended by the league for three games. Namba was ejected on April 28th from Game 2 of the Nuts' doubleheader at home against West Michigan.
Lugnuts right-hander Misaul Diaz (0-2, 7.11) goes to the mound in the Friday night rubber match against TinCaps righty Keyvius Sampson (4-1, 2.77). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
Lansing returns home to Cooley Law School Stadium on Derby Day, this coming Saturday at 7:05 p.m., with LAFCU Fireworks following the game against Lake County. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.lansinglugnuts.com, at the stadium box office, and by calling 517-485-4500.
