Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Juan Duran delivered a two-run double and four Dayton pitchers combined to allow just six hits as the Dragons defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks 4-2 on Thursday night. The win snapped the Dragons four-game losing streak and gave them their 10th home victory in the last 11 games at Fifth Third Field. A crowd of 8,164 saw the Dragons improve to 15-13 on the year.
Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Corcino (4-2) won his fourth straight start. He worked five innings, allowing three hits and two runs with two walks and five strikeouts.
Dayton reliever Daniel Wolford replaced Corcino in the sixth, entering the game with the tying run at second and no one out. Wolford pitched out of the jam and tossed a scoreless seventh inning. Blaine Howell worked the eighth for Dayton and Drew Hayes pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two, for his second save.
The Dragons took the lead in the first inning when Billy Hamilton doubled, stole third, and scored on a throwing error to make it 1-0. South Bend's Yazy Arbelo launched a solo home run over the center field fence in the second to tie the game.
In the fourth, Duran came to the plate with men at first and third with one out and belted a double to the left field corner to score two runs and give Dayton a 3-1 lead. The Silver Hawks pulled to within one in the sixth before Wolford pitched out of trouble.
Dayton added another run in the bottom of the sixth when Donald Lutz singled, went to second on a ground out, and scored on Devin Lohman's single to make it 4-2 and close out the scoring.
The Dragons finished with seven hits by seven different players. Lohman was 1 for 1 with two walks.
Dayton (15-13) hosts South Bend (9-17) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field in the finale of a three-game series. Daniel Tuttle (2-0, 4.57) will start for the Dragons. The Dragons begin a three-game series at West Michigan on Saturday.
