Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Amateur Hockey Association in conjunction with the Wheeling Nailers, the "AA" affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Philadelphia Flyers, are proud to introduce the inaugural Bedway Bell Classic. The game will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 18 at WesBanco Arena and will feature the Wheeling Central Maroon Knights and Wheeling Park Patriots. Face off is set for 8:05 PM.
The game is deservingly named after Nick Bedway, a graduate of Wheeling Central High School and long-time Ohio Valley resident. The Bedway Bell will be awarded to the winner of the game each year.
Before retiring in 2005, Nick had devoted his career to covering Ohio Valley sports since 1967 for The Intelligencer, including his coverage of the Wheeling Nailers. Some of his countless awards include the Gene Morehouse Award given for his service as president of the West Virginia Sports Writers Association in 1977, the Leadership Award from the Dapper Dan Club, and the first ever Father John Lester Award, given for devotion to the local sports and youth of the Ohio Valley. Bedway's name will now be honored through this charity game which will incorporate pride of Ohio Valley sports and the holiday spirit of giving.
