Wildcatters Ride Three Power Play Goals To 4-3 OT Win, Extend Unbeaten Streak To 12
December 12, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Texas Wildcatters News Release
ESTERO, FL--Ross Carlson scored the third Wildcatters power play goal of the night 3:00 into overtime to secure a 4-3 victory over the Florida Everblades and keep the Wildcatters unbeaten in their last 12 games.
Florida forward Mathieu Melanson finished off his hat trick with just 64 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game, but the Wildcatters recovered and capitalized on a Brad Zancanaro hooking call at 1:30 of the overtime period when Carlson fired a wrist shot from the top of the circles that beat Justin Peters and silenced the 4,504 Florida faithful in attendance.
Florida jumped to a 1-0 lead when Melanson scored his first of the night at 15:31 of the first period. Max Taylor would score the first of his two goals at 18:37(originally credited to John McNabb) on the Texas power play to tie the game at one before the first intermission.
It would be the Wildcatters who would take the lead when Danny Welch scored his eighth of the season just 40 seconds into the second frame. His goal, assisted by McNabb and Brandon Benedict, would be the only even-strength goal of the night for the 'Catters, who finished 3-for-7 on the power play.
Melanson would tie the score at 14:31, slinging a wrister past Texas goalie Peter Aubry, who would stop 29 shots to become the third ECHL goalie to ten wins this season.
Taylor would strike again 90 seconds later with another power play goal, assisted by the McNabb-Benedict duo, to give the 'Catters a 3-2 late in the game. Melanson would net his ECHL-leading 18th goal to finish the hat trick and send the game to overtime with only 1:04 remaining.
Carlson's heroic goal came on the 33rd Texas shot of the evening. McNabb collected his third assist of the night on the play and Welch his second.
The Wildcatters, who have not lost in regulation since November 17 and have extended their current ubeaten streak to a season-high twelve games, continue the three-game series with the third-place Everblades Friday night at 6:30 Texas time in Estero, Florida.
The 'Catters return home for a three-game series versus the Mississippi Sea Wolves from December 20-22. Check out wildcattershockey.com for all the latest in promotions, scheduling, and ticket information or call (409) 951-500!
