Vegas Ends Gulls' Winning Streak, 6-2

March 3, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls haven't quite been able to solve the Las Vegas Wranglers yet. The Wranglers scored four times in the first period and that's all they would need en route to a 6-2 victory over San Diego Friday night, before 6,062 at the ipayOne Center.

The Gulls (25-24-5), who had their season-high five-game winning streak snapped, are now 0-5 against Las Vegas this season. They also dropped back into fourth place in the Pacific Division, trailing third-place Bakersfield by two points. Las Vegas (40-9-6), which has outscored San Diego 29-11 in five meetings, has now won four straight overall and is unbeaten in 12 of its last 14 games (10-2-2).

The first period was the story, as the Wranglers jumped out to a 4-1 lead, thanks to a pair of goals by Steve Crampton and one each by Sean O'Connor and Christian Chartier.

O'Connor got things started with this 12th goal 3:34 into the game, weaving into the San Diego zone before squeezing a sharp angle wrist shot past Tom Lawson. Mark Wires tied it with his 10th goal at the 14:37 mark, but Vegas answered with three more goals in a 2:59 span to close out the frame.

Crampton, who netted a hat trick in the last meeting on Valentines Day, got his first of the period at 16:52, flinging home a shot from the slot. Chartier buried his fifth of the year at 18:37 before Crampton notched his second of the night - 17th of the season - with a power-play goal at 19:51. Crampton's linemates Dan Tudin and Matt Dzieduszycki earned assists on both of his goals.

San Diego made it a 4-2 game 15:56 into the second period on a nice individual effort by newcomer Dennis Shiryaev. After digging the puck out of the right wing corner, Shiryaev fell to the ice but still managed to chip it over-top the glove of Wranglers goaltender Marc Magliarditi. It was his first goal in a Gulls uniform and fourth overall.

Meanwhile, Tyler Weiman, who entered in relief of Lawson to start the second period, stopped all 11 shots he faced in the middle frame. He continued to shine in the third period until Chartier knocked home his second of the night (sixth overall) and second Vegas power-play goal at 12:42. Chartier then assisted on the final Vegas goal, as Marco Peluso notched his 11th at the 14:17 mark.

Notes: The trio of Crampton (6g, 4a), Tudin (4g, 6a) and Dzieduszycki (3g, 11a) has combined for 34 points (13g, 21a) in five games against the Gulls this season... Lawson had won his previous three straight starts, stopping 96 of 98 shots (.980 save percentage)... Wires has 10 points (4g, 6a) in the last seven games... Despite allowing two power-play goals Friday, San Diego has killed 108 of 120 penalties in the last 20 games (90 percent)...

The Gulls and Wranglers are right back at it Saturday from the ipayOne Center, with game-time set for 7:05 p.m. It will be Disco Night and 5,000 special "Fro" wings will be handed out, courtesy of Jerome's Furniture.
