March 10, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane, WA - The Spokane Chiefs fell Friday night thanks to a late flurry of three third period goals for the Winterhawks, making the final score 5-2 in favor of the team from Portland.

The first period went by quickly with few stops outside of the opener from Portland scored at 4:04. Carter Sotheran scored his 4th of the season with Josh Mori registering his 4th assist of the year on the play.

Spokane Chiefs' captain Raegan Wiles earned 3rd Star of the night with a goal at 4:23 in the second frame. The Calgary native registered his 9th of the year, with helpers from Michael Cicek and youngster Cole Wadsworth. The rookie notched his 5th assist of the year giving him 5 points in his young career.

Spokane would take the lead at 10:33 with a beauty of a goal from 20-year-old Cade Hayes. Brayden Crampton fed Hayes from long distance before the veteran beat the defender and the goalie with a swift move towards the net. For Crampton it was his 11th assist on the year, more than doubling his assist total from last season. Hayes' 19th of the season brings him up to a tie for 4th on the team in goals and he sits at 5th on the team with 39 points this season.

Not sure who Carter Hayes is, but what a BEAUT here from Cade to give us the lead!

Spokane's lead would not last, as Portland was back on the score sheet at 16:08 of the 2nd. Robbie Fromm-Delorme earned his 29th goal of the season with helpers from standout Luca Cagnoni and team point leader Gabe Klassen. The two teams would head into the break knotted up at two goals apiece. The Chiefs came out flat in the third, not helped by a lengthy goal review. Eventually a potential Spokane goal was ruled no good, but by then the momentum had shifted into Portland's favor.

The Winterhawks would score three unanswered in the period to turn a tight game into a rout. Zakreski (9), Fromm-Delorme (30), and Nguyen (21) put the finishing touches on this one. The teams combined for seven penalties on the night with Portland going 1/3 and Spokane going 0/4 with the man advantage.

The Chiefs outshot the Winterhawks 32-21 in front of another strong 5300+ Spokane crowd. The two teams will play again in just a few days' time on Tuesday down in Portland. It will be the 8th and final matchup of the season. Tomorrow night Spokane will host Kelowna for the Numerica Boomer The Pig Piggy Bank Giveaway for the first 2000 fans.
