Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Winnipeg, MB - The Edmonton Oil Kings were able to extract a point in Winnipeg on Friday night as they dropped a 5-4 decision in overtime to the ICE at the Wayne Fleming Arena.
In the first period, Edmonton and Winnipeg combined for three power play goals, with the Oil Kings getting two of them to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Loick Daigle staked Edmonton to an early lead after ripping a shot over the left-shoulder of Mason Beaupit from the right-circle after receiving a cross-ice dish from Marshall Finnie, just over six minutes into the game. The goal was Daigle's fifth of the campaign.
The ICE responded four minutes later after Zack Ostapchuk was able to shovel in a backdoor pass from Evan Friesen.
With 1:12 left in the period, Cole Miller notched his eighth goal of the season on a setup from Gavin Hodnett, the goal nearly a carbon copy of their first, with Miller elevating a shot over the left-arm of Beaupit from the right-circle.
In the second period, the ICE were able to level the score on a late goal from Matthew Savoie after he was sprung on a breakaway and made no mistake with a move to his backhand to send the two Clubs to the third period tied at two.
Just over a minute into the third period, the ICE pulled ahead 4-2 thanks to a pair of quick goals from Ostapchuk, his second of the night, and Josh Medernach.
The Oil Kings though, wouldn't go quietly, as they responded with a pair of goals of their own to even the score at four just past the halfway mark of the period.
Rilen Kovacevic brought Edmonton to within a goal after scorching home a shot from the high-slot on an Edmonton power play for his 15th of the season at the 3:11 mark.
Midway through the frame, Mason Finley drew Edmonton back to equal footing after he was able to deposit a loose puck in front of the Winnipeg net for his 11th of the season, sending this game to overtime.
In overtime, the ICE would put the game away with a goal from Ty Nash 3:08 into the bonus session.
Logan Cunningham finished the night making 25 saves for the Oil Kings, while Beaupit turned in 13 for Winnipeg. Edmonton went 3-for-5 on the power play, the ICE were 1-for-3.
Next up, the Oil Kings finish their three-game road trip on tomorrow night in Brandon when they take on the Wheat Kings at 6:00 p.m. MT.
