August 2, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim today announced the minor league player of the month awards for July and while there were no Kernels among those honored all three honorees are former Cedar Rapids players.
Brandon Wood was named Player of the Month with Joe Saunders honored as Pitcher of the Month and Tommy Murphy selected as Defensive Player of the Month. Wood currently plays with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes with Saunders at Triple-A Salt Lake and Murphy at Double-A Arkansas.
Wood, a 2004 Midwest League All-Star with the Kernels, continued his assault on California League pitching last month by hitting .382 with 8 HR, 30 RBI, and 23 runs. He currently leads the minors with 34 home runs.
Saunders, a member of the 2002 Kernels, was 2-0 with a miniscule 0.43 ERA in three starts for Arkansas before he left the Travelers to join up with the Stingers in Salt Lake. Over 21 innings the lefty allowed just nine hits and one earned run at Little Rock before going 2-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 21.2 innings at Triple-A.
Murphy, who spent part of 2001 and all of 2002 with the Kernels, played in 31 games for the Travelers and played flawless defense while batting .264 with 3 HR and 16 RBI last month.
The major league club honors each of its minor league players of the month by presenting them with a Kenneth Cole watch bearing the Angels logo. Former Kernels outfielder Aaron Peel was the organization's Player of the Month in June.
