Kane County Cougars News Release
Peoria, IL - The Kane County Cougars used a four-run sixth inning to sprint to a 6-1 lead against the Peoria Chiefs on Tuesday night and an eventual 7-3 win. Ryan Ford got his 10th victory of the season, and Luis Perez and Javier Herrera each had two-run base hits in the sixth. The led comfortably when they faced Chicago Cubs' right-hander Kerry Wood, who was making a rehabilitation stint with the Chiefs at O'Brien Field.
Ford gave up an unearned run in the third for a 1-0 deficit, but the Cougars tied it in the fourth off Chiefs starter Grant Johnson. Travis Buck, who joined the team Tuesday from Short-A Vancouver, walked, stole second and scored on a single by Myron Leslie. The Cougars took the lead in the fifth when Buck bounced out with the bases loaded for his first RBI with the club. Ford kept cruising, and Kane County busted open the game in the sixth against reliever Jerry Blevins. Perez drove in two with a bases-loaded single, and Herrera got two RBI for the same output and a 6-1 game. Blevins left with two outs, allowing Wood to enter. He fanned Buck to end that frame, then struck out Jose Pineda and Leslie before Raul Padron popped out to second base. Wood left to a standing ovation from the 8,012 fans.
The Chiefs scored once in the seventh off Mike Mitchell and again in the eighth off Derek Tharpe, but the Herrera scampered home from a fielder's choice by Pineda in the ninth for the 7-3 final. Ford (10-6) got his second victory this season against Peoria, Johnson (2-5) was the losing hurler and Jared Trout worked 1 2/3 innings for his first professional save.
