Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Cedar Rapids infielder Alexi Casilla has been selected by Baseball Advanced Media (BAM) as its Midwest League Player of the Week for his performance the week of July 25-31.

The plucky middle infielder is currently in the midst of an 18-game hitting streak as the Kernels prepare to open a four-game series with the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays in Battle Creek Tuesday night.

In six games last week Casilla collected 15 hits in 23 at bats for a .652 batting average. He had two doubles, a triple, a home run, and four RBI along with five stolen bases. He had multiple hits in all six of his starts, including a 5-for-5 performance against Dayton on July 30 when he scored three runs.

Casilla is the second Kernels player to earn a weekly honor from BAM during the 2005 season. Former pitcher Rafael Rodriguez, now with Rancho Cucamonga of the California League, was named Pitcher of the Week of June 13th.

The Kernels return home August 11th to open an eight-game home stand with Kane County and Southwest Michigan.
