Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (August 1, 2005) - The Burlington Bees (21-17, 55-53) scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, but didn't score again as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (21-17, 60-48) came from behind to win 6-4 at Community Field tonight and take three of four in this series. Wisconsin now leads the season series 6-2.

Wisconsin starter Randy Frye had a rough night. He walked Irving Falu to start the first inning and with one out, hit Ed Lucas with a pitch. Damaso Espino lined a single to left-center to drive in Falu with the first run and Brian McFall followed with a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Lucas to make it 2-0. Frye then hit Geraldo Valentin with a pitch before Kenard Springer lined a single to right-center to drive in Espino and extend the lead to 3-0. Eddie Solis capped the rally by ripping a base hit down the left field line that drove in Valentin. Frye got Darwinson Salazar to fly out to left to end the inning, but walked Falu and Cody Cure to start the second. After falling behind 2-0 on Lucas, the pitching coach and trainer came out to the mound to check on Frye who rubbed his lower back and left the game. Cibney Bello took over in relief, got out of the jam, and ended up allowing one hit and striking out six through five innings of work. John Lockwood (1-0) was perfect through the final three innings and picked up the win when the Rattlers came-from-behind for the victory. The Wisconsin bullpen hasn't allowed a run in their last 22.2 innings.

Bees' starter Patrick Hicklen didn't allow a hit through two innings before Omar Falcon led off the third with a solo home run to left to get the Timber Rattlers on the board. Hicklen walked a man and hit the next to put two on with nobody out, but was able to get out of the game thanks in part to an unassisted double-play by Falu at shortstop snaring a line drive and doubling the runner of second. Wisconsin added a run in the fourth. With two outs, Yung Chi Cheng doubled and moved to third as Matt Tuiasosopo reached on an error by Lucas at third. After a walk to Falcon loaded the bases, Josh Womack singled to right to drive in Chen, but McFall threw out Tuiasosopo to end the inning as Espino held onto the ball after a tremendous collision at the plate.

In the sixth, the Rattlers had the bases loaded and one out when Falcon hit a pop-up into foul territory down the right field line. McFall made the catch and came up throwing. The runners started and stopped, but as the ball skipped off Espino and up the third base line, all three advanced and Marshall Hubbard scored. Hicklen gave way to Adam Rowe, who allowed an infield single to Womack to tie the game at four. Rowe (5-5) finished the game and suffered the loss, giving up two runs in the top of the eighth. With one out, Cheng and Tuiasosopo reached to put men on second and third. An intentional walk to Falcon loaded the bases and pinch-hitter Brent Johnson lined a single over first to drive in two for the Rattlers' first lead and the win.

The Bees go back on the road to start a four-game series at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing tomorrow night at 6:05 Central time. RH Gabe DeHoyos (4-1, 1.37) will start for the Bees against RH Po-Hsuan Keng (2-4, 5.10) for the Lugnuts. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:45.
