West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
BELOIT, WI - For the second game in a row, Jeff Frazier hit a two run home in the first inning to start an evening of offense and a 10-9 Whitecaps victory in Beloit.
Wilkin Ramirez outshined Frazier by going 3-for-4 with a two-run homer of his own, a double and an RBI single.
West Michigan built leads of four runs and five runs, but each was reduced to one run, thanks in large part to Johnny Woodard. He went 4-for-5 with a pair of two-run homers, a double and an RBI single.
Lavon Lewis made his first start of the season for the Whitecaps and pitched four innings with three runs allowed on four hits.
Kevin Ardoin pitched 2.2 innings of relief and picked up the win.
When Ardoin walked Steve Tolleson with two out in the fifth, it was the first walk allowed by the Whitecaps since Andrew Kown walked John Jaso with one out in the sixth inning of Friday's game against Southwest Michigan.
That was a streak of 39 consecutive innings by the Whitecaps pitching staff without allowing a walk. Anthony Tomey retired the final four batters of the game to earn his first save since July 7. It was his eighth save of the season. West Michigan has won three consecutive road games for the first time this season.
Tops in the League: Matt Walbeck has been named the top managing prospect in the Midwest League, according to Baseball America. The publication annually surveys managers in each Minor League looking for the players and coaches with the "Best Tools".
A Hot July: The four pitchers in the West Michigan starting rotation finished in the Midwest League top 10 in ERA in July. Jair Jurrjens posted a league-best 2.16. The other Whitecaps in the top ten: Josh Rainwater, 4th, 2.55 Dallas Trahern, 5th, 2.61 Andrew Kown, 9th, 3.03 Kown was 3-1 in July, but left handed reliever Ed Clelland took a share of the league lead for the month with four wins. Trahern's ERA includes a streak of 25.1 consecutive innings pitched without allowing an earned run, which was the third longest run in team history.
Outfielder Jeff Frazier had more hits (41) and doubles (14) in July than any other Midwest League position player. He posted a .357 batting average, which was the sixth-best on the circuit.
