
Cougars top Chiefs, 7-3

Peoria, IL - The Kane County Cougars scored four runs in the top of the 6th inning off Peoria Chiefs reliever Jerry Blevins on their way to a 7-3 victory in front of 8,012 fans Tuesday night at O'Brien Field. Kerry Wood pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief, striking out three and inducing a flyout to end the 7th inning The Chiefs opened the scoring in the 3rd inning with an unearned run. Anthony Granato hit a one-out single to center, stole second base on an attempted pickoff from Kane County starting pitcher Ryan Ford, and moved to third base on a throwing error by Cougars first baseman Tommy Everidge. He scored on a wild pitch from Ford and the Chiefs led 1-0.
Kane County tied the game in the 4th inning at 1-1 on an RBI single from Myron Leslie. The Cougars took the lead for good with another run in the 5th inning after Travis Buck grounded out with the bases loaded for a 2-1 lead.
Blevins entered the game in the 6th inning with the Chiefs trailing 2-1 and gave up four runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning. After Blevins retired Everidge with a flyout to right, Wood entered the game and struck out Buck on four pitches to end the inning. Wood pitched a perfect 7th inning, striking out the first two batters he faced before getting Raul Padron popped out to end the inning. Wood threw 15 pitches over 1 1/3 innings.
The Chiefs battled back with one run in the 7th and one run in the 8th. Eric Patterson doubled home Aaron Smith to bring the Chiefs within 6-2. In the 8th, Jesse Schmidt led off the inning with a triple to center field. Bo Flowers hit a sacrifice fly in the next at bat to score Schmidt and trim the deficit to 6-3. That's all the closer the Chiefs would get, as the Cougars added a run in the 9th for a 7-3 lead.
Grant Johnson took the loss for the Chiefs, falling to 2-5. He gave up two runs on five hits over five innings. Ryan Ford won his 10th game of the year for Kane County, while Jared Trout pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the year. Pepsi Players of the Game
Kerry Wood (RHP) - The Cubs pitcher tossed 1 1/3 innings on a rehab assignment, striking out three and getting out of a jam in the 6th inning. He hit 98 on the radar gun several times and threw just 15 pitches.
Notes...
